Article Abstract

Purpose: Guided by the COM-B model ("capability," "opportunity," "motivation," and "behavior"), this study explores the factors and potential mechanisms of social withdrawal in children with cancer.

Methods: The illness experiences shared by families of children with cancer on the internet provided a unique opportunity for this study. An interdisciplinary research team was formed, and a hybrid thematic analysis was conducted to examine 41 online illness narratives describing the experiences of children (≤ 18 years old) diagnosed with cancer.

Results: This study identified seven themes: (1) Capability: physical problem and self-acceptance; (2) Motivation: stigma and self-esteem; (3) Opportunity: interpersonal interaction, parental parenting style, and social support. Analysis revealed that stigma indirectly influences social withdrawal through self-esteem; physical problem indirectly influences social withdrawal by affecting interpersonal interaction; and parental parenting style and social support further influence children's social withdrawal behaviors by affecting self-acceptance.

Conclusions: This study applied the COM-B model to pediatric oncology, revealing the multifaceted causes of social withdrawal in children with cancer. It highlights the need, beyond physical recovery, to foster psychological acceptance, build motivation, and expand social opportunities. Examples include integrated physical-social interventions, positive parenting, enhanced self-worth, and strengthened disease awareness and support networks to encourage active social engagement.

Implications For Cancer Survivors: The findings are derived from authentic interview texts of children with cancer or their caregivers, providing practical reference value. This deepens understanding of the causes of social withdrawal in cancer survivors and informs more effective strategies to support their social reintegration.

Problematic mobile phone use (PMPU) has become increasingly prevalent among young adults, raising concerns about its psychological underpinnings. While shyness has been linked to PMPU, few studies have explored the symptom-level mechanisms that differentiate problematic from non-problematic users. This study employed psychological network analysis to examine the structure and central symptoms of PMPU in two groups: problematic and non-problematic mobile phone users.

Groundwater overextraction presents persistent challenges due to strategic interdependence among decentralized users. While game-theoretic models have advanced the analysis of individual incentives and collective outcomes, most frameworks assume fully rational agents and neglect the role of cognitive and social factors. This study proposes a coupled model that integrates opinion dynamics with a differential game of groundwater extraction, capturing the interaction between institutional authority and evolving stakeholder preferences.

Stakeholders in the breast implant industry in Korea have recently experienced a crisis from breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma and the first Korean case of a medical device fraud. We compared the short-term safety between the microtextured devices that are commercially available after the occurrence of breast implant crisis in Korea. The current study was conducted in a cohort of Korean women who had received an implant-based augmentation mammaplasty for aesthetic purposes between November 14, 2020 and October 13, 2022.
