Symptoms of sickle cell disease (SCD) may be worsened by environmental factors. Although outdoor air pollution has been proposed as a potential trigger, the specific role of carbon monoxide (CO) among traffic-related pollutants, remains understudied in those with SCD. Based on South Carolina hospital encounter records (2002-2019) for SCD patients, we estimated daily 8-hour maximum outdoor CO concentrations at patients' residential zip codes using a newly-developed spatio-temporal model. We also estimated daily particulate matter<2.5 μm (PM.), ozone (O), and elemental carbon (EC) concentrations using previously-developed spatio-temporal models. Using a bi-directional case-crossover design, we evaluated whether CO concentrations over 1-, 3-, 5-, 9-, and 14-day periods were associated with acute SCD hospitalizations. We also evaluated two-pollutant models adjusting for co-pollutants. We studied 8,410 patients with 144,129 hospital encounters. We observed significant positive associations between EC, CO, PM, O over various short-term periods with SCD hospital encounters and, among all patients and especially among children. Two-pollutant model results among children suggest CO and EC exert separate and independent effects on SCD. Exposure to short-term elevations in outdoor air pollution, especially traffic-related pollutants, may be associated with acute SCD hospitalization. These results underscore the potential health risks posed by air pollution and highlight the need for targeted interventions to reduce exposure, especially among children.

While studies have examined associations between air pollution and subjective long COVID outcomes such as fatigue and symptoms, no studies have focused on objective lung health measures. This study aimed to assess the impact of air pollution, examined through different exposure methods (exposures assigned via geospatial model, versus residential and personal measurements) on pulmonary function and radiological abnormalities in long COVID patients. We recruited 95 patients who attended a hospital outpatient clinic 3-6 months post-infection, during which pulmonary function was assessed via spirometry (FEV1,FVC,FEV1/FVC ratio) and diffusion capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO), along with a chest CT.

Air pollution is a significant public health issue that impacts lung health, particularly in vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions. Both natural and anthropogenic sources of air pollution give rise to a variety of toxic compounds, including particulate matter (PM), ozone (O₃), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), carbon monoxide (CO), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Exposure to these pollutants is strongly associated with the development and exacerbation of respiratory diseases, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer, and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).

Controlling vehicular emissions is a critical priority, particularly in developing countries like Brazil, where the vehicular fleet has expanded significantly. Although Brazil's Program to Control Vehicular Emissions has reduced certain air pollutants by mandating technological advancements in new vehicles, it did not consider the substantial increase in vehicle numbers and density across the country. Electrochemical CO reduction (CORR) to carbon monoxide (CO) offers a sustainable pathway for carbon utilization, yet challenges remain in terms of improving selectivity and activity. Herein, we report a Ni/NC catalyst synthesized via a milling - pyrolysis method, in which Ni particles anchored on nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) are electrochemically activated under an Ar atmosphere, leading to their structural evolution into single-atom Ni sites. After activation in Ar atmosphere, the current density nearly doubles (from ≈30 to ≈60 mA cm), and concurrently, the Faradaic efficiency of CO stays at ∼90% with the potential set to -0.
