Thermal imaging for estimating melting point in cheese: A cost-effective alternative to rheology.

JDS Commun

September 2025

Dairy and Food Science Department, Midwest Dairy Foods Research Center, South Dakota State University, Brookings, SD 57007.

The melting characteristics of cheese play a pivotal role in determining functional performance in various applications. Measuring the meltability and melting point of cheese is a challenge and requires sophisticated equipment, a laboratory setup, and personnel training, and the cost can be prohibitive. Over the years, many tests have been developed to determine the meltability or melting point of cheese.

Background: Hospital admissions occur frequently in nursing homes and are often preventable. Inappropriate hospitalisations due to nursing home-sensitive conditions pose significant risks to residents, place additional strain on emergency departments and hospitals, and thus lead to substantial healthcare costs. In light of demographic changes- characterised by an aging and increasingly multimorbid nursing home population- combined with ubiquitous lack of health care professionals, new strategies are urgently needed to ensure adequate medical care in nursing homes.

Background: Current guidelines recommend that the door-to-wire (D2W) time should be <90 min in patients undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). This study evaluated the effect of a 24/7 on-site PCI team strategy on the D2W time.

Methods: In this single-centre, retrospective study, patients with STEMI undergoing primary PCI within 1 year before (control group, n=143) and 1 year after (intervention group, n=96) implementing a 24/7 on-site PCI team strategy were enrolled.

Accuracy of recording linear erosion using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

PLoS One

September 2025

Hydraulic Engineering and Water Management, School of Architecture and Civil Engineering, University of Applied Sciences, Saarbrücken, Germany.

Soil erosion is an ongoing environmental problem. To address this issue, calibrated erosion models are used to forecast areas vulnerable to erosion and to determine appropriate preventive measures. Model calibrations are based on erosion data recorded using different techniques such as photogrammetry from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

Background: Persons experiencing housing instability (PEHIs) are medically vulnerable and at increased risk for poor health outcomes, high clinical service utilization, and mortality. Unstable housing is just one of many social determinants of health or nonmedical factors influencing health outcomes.

Methods: Focus groups were conducted on-site at two Kentucky homeless shelters to assess the structure and perceived effectiveness of Medicaid managed care organizations (MCOs) and community-based organizations (CBOs) partnerships.
