Article Abstract

Vocalizations during the breeding season play a significant role in both intra- and inter-specific communications. There have been numerous studies on the calls and functions of the common cuckoo ( [CC]). However, there is limited research on the calls and functions of female CCs. This study conducted a playback experiment of 90 sample sizes on actively breeding CCs and their hosts in Jilin Province, China, during the 2022 breeding season (May to August), with calls from female CCs, male CCs, and males of the Himalayan cuckoo ( [CS]) as control groups. The results showed that the calls of both male and female CCs attracted CCs and their hosts in the experimental area, while the control group did not attract any birds. The attracted CCs were predominantly males. Among the attracted hosts, there were Oriental reed warblers () and black-browed reed warblers (). Generalized linear mixed model analysis revealed that the number of individuals attracted by female CC calls was significantly higher than the number attracted by male CC calls, both for male CCs and hosts. Furthermore, male CCs were attracted by male and female CC calls to a significantly greater extent during the early stage than during the late stage, while there was no difference in the number of attracted host individuals. Our study showed that the calls of female CCs play an important role in the communication between male and female CCs, and hosts are more responsive to the calls of female CCs, suggesting that they perceive female cuckoos as more threatening. Our study reveals seasonally modulated male attraction and host sensitivity.

Preliminary evidence suggests that Tai Chi may effectively relieve pain symptoms, increase quality of life, and reduce cardiovascular risk in patients with chronic coronary syndrome (CCS). However, few randomized controlled trials have specifically investigated the potential benefits of Tai Chi in patients with CCS, particularly regarding its effects on psychological stress and cellular stress levels. To evaluate the effectiveness of a hybrid Tai Chi cardiac rehabilitation programme in reducing perceived stress and oxidative stress in diagnosed patients.

Background: Identification of significant coronary artery stenosis (CAS) in patients with chronic coronary syndromes (CCS) is crucial for clinical management. Myocardial work (MW) is a new noninvasive method reflecting myocardial metabolism and has been applied in myocardial ischemia. We aimed to explore the value of global MW during vasodilator stress echocardiography in detecting significant CAS.

Background: At the beginning of their clinical clerkships (CCs), medical students face multiple challenges related to acquiring clinical and communication skills, building professional relationships, and managing psychological stress. While mentoring and structured feedback are known to provide critical support, existing systems may not offer sufficient and timely guidance owing to the faculty's limited availability. Generative artificial intelligence, particularly large language models, offers new opportunities to support medical education by providing context-sensitive responses.

Background: Cancer cells, which rely heavily on mitochondria for their energy demands and oncometabolites, have a high mitochondrial load, often associated with an aggressive, invasive, and metastatic phenotype. Mitochondrial ROS (mtROS), which play a causal role in cancer, represent the Achilles' heel of cancer since excessive mtROS causes protein misfolding/aggregation, resulting in cell death via proteotoxic stress. Furthermore, the detailed underlying mechanism(s) of mitochondrial oxidative stress-induced cell death remain obscure.

Background: Arginyl-tRNA-protein transferase (ATE1) catalyzes N-terminal arginylation, a regulatory protein modification implicated in various cellular processes, including proliferation, apoptosis, and migration. Although ATE1 has context-dependent roles in cancer, its specific function in breast cancer remains unclear. This study investigates the oncogenic role of ATE1 across multiple breast cancer subtypes and its underlying molecular mechanisms.
