Systematic analyses uncover plasma proteins linked to incident cardiovascular diseases.

Protein Cell

August 2025

Department of Neurology and National Center for Neurological Disorders, Huashan Hospital, State Key Laboratory of Medical Neurobiology and MOE Frontiers Center for Brain Science, Fudan University, Shanghai 200433, China.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) research is hindered by limited comprehensive analyses of plasma proteome across disease subtypes. Here, we systematically investigated the associations between plasma proteins and cardiovascular outcomes in 53,026 UK Biobank participants over a 14-year follow-up. Association analyses identified 3,089 significant associations involving 892 unique protein analytes across 13 CVD outcomes.

Background: Risk stratification in posterior circulation ischemic stroke (PCIS) is challenging. Although the Posterior Circulation Ischemic Stroke Outcome Score (PCISOS) was developed to address this, its utility in minor PCIS and in identifying homogeneous populations for clinical trials or treatment-responsive subgroups remains uncertain.

Methods: CHANCE-2 (Clopidogrel in High-Risk Patients With Acute Non-disabling Cerebrovascular Events-II) was a multicenter, randomized trial that enrolled patients with minor stroke or high-risk transient ischemic attack who carried CYP2C19 loss-of-function alleles.

Surgical outcomes from haematoma evacuation for intracerebral haemorrhage in the INTERACT3 study.

Lancet Reg Health West Pac

September 2025

Department of Neurosurgery, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu, China.

Background: There is ongoing controversy as to whether surgical intervention to haematoma evacuation benefits patients with acute intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH). This study aimed to evaluate the association of surgical intervention to evacuate the haematoma and 6-month functional outcome in participants of the third Intensive Care Bundle with Blood Pressure Reduction in Acute Cerebral Haemorrhage Trial (INTERACT3).

Methods: This was a secondary analysis of INTERACT3, which enrolled adults (age ≥18 years) spontaneous ICH patients within 6 h after onset.

Background: Cardiac laminopathies, associated with mutations in the LMNA gene, are a rare inherited disorder characterized by a broad range of clinical manifestations. There are currently no data on the association between supraventricular re-entrant tachycardias and LMNA-related cardiomyopathy.

Case Summary: A 26-year-old male presented with either wide-QRS tachycardia with a left bundle branch block (LBBB) pattern or narrow QRS tachycardia, as well as a history of palpitations since age 15.

A TURP without a foot pedal-making do in a resource poor setting.

J Surg Case Rep

September 2025

Department of Urological Surgery, Barwon Health, University Hospital, Bellerine St, Geelong, VIC 3220, Australia.

Delivering surgical services in low- and middle-income countries often requires adaptability and ingenuity due to resource limitations. This case report describes how a visiting surgical team in a Pacific Island nation overcame the absence of a diathermy foot pedal during a transurethral resection of the prostate by collaborating with both on-site and remote biomedical engineers. The team modified a handheld pencil diathermy to mimic foot pedal functionality.
