Article Abstract

To co-create a community-informed model of EV adoption, we conducted one English-speaking and two Spanish-speaking focus groups with 29 residents from six disadvantaged urban communities in Southeast Los Angeles. Participants were asked whether they owned an EV or hybrid vehicle, benefits and obstacles to EV ownership, and recommendations for making EV adoption feasible and acceptable. A Community Advisory Council participated in preparation of an interview guide and a review of findings. Social, environmental and personal benefits were cited as reasons for EV ownership but were considered secondary to cost, limited infrastructure (e.g., chargers), and lack of information. This information was used to generate a logic model listing adoption determinants, strategies, causal mechanisms and outcomes. A community informed model serves as a potential tool for promoting the adoption of EVs in disadvantaged communities and creating the conditions necessary for such adoption to be perceived by residents as acceptable, feasible, and appropriate.

Understanding biocide performance in mixed-species biofilms is critical to mitigating microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC). In this study, a novel dual anaerobic biofilm reactor was used to evaluate glutaraldehyde efficacy under environmentally relevant conditions, using a complex microbial consortium from marine sediment. Despite biocide dosing, biofilms persisted and induced localized corrosion, indicating incomplete mitigation.

Electronic health record (EHR)-based models to identify individuals who may benefit from pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) outperform traditional risk scores and may alleviate challenges associated with PrEP initiation. Pre-implementation work is critical to ensure algorithms are optimized for the local context, particularly given regional differences in the US HIV epidemic. To inform the derivation and implementation of EHR-based models within health systems in New Orleans and Baton Rouge, Louisiana, we conducted focus group discussions (FGDs) with community advocates and in-depth interviews (IDIs) with emergency department, primary care, and HIV-trained clinicians.

Significant factors impact the wellbeing of South Sudanese youth who settle in Australia. This article proposes a community empowerment framework based on outcomes from research and community feedback undertaken in Melbourne, with South Sudanese youth and elders to improve social connection and community engagement of the youth. Twenty-three semi-structured interviews, four focus groups and two community forums were conducted using qualitative, case study methodology.
