Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) programs have been shown, in many types of operations and surgical specialties, to be the gold standard of perioperative patient care. This statement is sustained by strong evidence on the significant reduction of postoperative morbidity, duration of hospitalization, health-related costs, nurse working load, and improved patient satisfaction when the programs are fully implemented. However, in some fields of surgery, the evidence is still moderate because data collection and systematic research has begun few years ago. Emergency and pediatric surgery are a good example. This narrative review emphasis the available and published data and highlights the limitations of current research. Yet, several ERAS key domains both in emergency and pediatric surgery may be already implemented because the level of evidence is consolidated despite considering the peculiarity of these populations and the technical diversity of some operations.

Epigenetic processes, such as DNA methylation, show potential as biological markers and mechanisms underlying gene-environment interplay in the prediction of mental health and other brain-based phenotypes. However, little is known about how peripheral epigenetic patterns relate to individual differences in the brain itself. An increasingly popular approach to address this is by combining epigenetic and neuroimaging data; yet, research in this area is almost entirely comprised of cross-sectional studies in adults.

Background: Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) has been thought to increase the risk of respiratory depression from opioids. The primary aim of this study was to assess whether preoperative hypoxaemia by sleep study pulse oximetry imparts greater opioid sensitivity.
Methods: A multicentre observational cohort study with in-cohort dose randomisation was performed in children 2-8 yr of age with OSA undergoing adenotonsillectomy.

Background: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disorder that remains underrecognized across Africa, where limited diagnostic capacity, low awareness, and competing health priorities contribute to delayed or missed diagnoses [1-4]. Although increasing data suggests CF is more prevalent than previously believed in Africa, survival remains poor [1]. These challenges do not only affect people with CF (pwCF) in Africa but also have implications for global understanding of the disease, particularly among populations historically excluded from CF research and treatment advances.

Microplastics (MPs) are emerging vectors for hydrophobic organic pollutants, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), in aquatic environments. Due to their high surface area and sorption potential, MPs can enhance the environmental persistence and bioavailability of toxic compounds, posing potential risks to both aquatic organisms and human health. This study investigates the distribution, sorption behavior, and effects on pollutant transport, distribution, and exposure pathways of PAHs-contaminated microplastics in two major Romanian rivers: the Prahova and Ialomita.
