Adipose tissue exhibits dynamic metabolic and structural changes in response to environmental stimuli, including temperature fluctuations. While continuous cold exposure has been extensively studied, the molecular effects of prolonged intermittent cold exposure (ICE) remain poorly characterized. Here, we present a proteomic analysis of inguinal white adipose tissue (IWAT) from mice subjected to a 16-week regimen of short-term daily ICE (6 °C for 6 h, 5 days per week) without compensatory caloric intake. Mass spectrometry identified 1108 proteins, with 140 differentially expressed between experimental and control groups. ICE significantly upregulated mitochondrial proteins associated with lipid and carbohydrate catabolism, the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, oxidative phosphorylation, and lipogenesis, including LETM1, AIFM1, PHB, PHB2, ACOT2, NDUA9, and ATP5J. These changes reflect enhanced metabolic activity and mitochondrial remodeling. In contrast, proteins linked to oxidative stress, insulin resistance, inflammation, and extracellular matrix remodeling were downregulated, such as HMGB1, FETUA, SERPH1, RPN1, and AOC3. Notably, gamma-synuclein (SYUG), which inhibits lipolysis, was undetectable in ICE-treated samples. Our findings support the hypothesis that ICE promotes thermogenic reprogramming and metabolic rejuvenation in subcutaneous fat through activation of futile cycles and mitochondrial restructuring. This study offers molecular insights into adaptive thermogenesis and presents intermittent cold exposure as a potential strategy to mitigate adipose tissue aging.

Undesired ice accumulation on infrastructure and transportation systems leads to catastrophic events and significant economic losses. Although various anti-icing surfaces with photothermal effects can initially prevent icing, any thawy droplets remaining on the horizontal surface can quickly re-freezing once the light diminishes. To address these challenges, we have developed a self-draining slippery surface (SDSS) that enables the thawy droplets to self-remove on the horizontal surface, thereby facilitating real-time anti-icing with the aid of sunlight (100 mW cm).

Accurate attribution of the areas and populations impacted by climate-related events often relies on linear distance-based methods, where the study unit is assigned temperature data to the closest weather station. We developed a novel method and data pipeline that provides a grid-based measure of exposure to extreme heat and cold events called Grid EXposure (, enabling linkage to individual-level human health data at different spatial scales. GridEX automates the gathering of station-based climatological data and provides estimates of apparent temperature, offering a more comprehensive representation of human thermal comfort and perceived temperature.

Climate change has heightened awareness of the health impacts of non-optimal temperatures (cold and heat), including the effect of gestational exposure and birth outcomes. However, temperature exposure assessment remains methodologically challenging due to unaccounted individual spatiotemporal mobility and adaptive behaviors, a gap that has not been adequately addressed in published studies. Using data from a prospective birth cohort in Guangzhou, China, conducted from 2017 to 2020, we assessed and compared three different exposure measures: home-based exposure, derived solely from ambient temperature data at residential locations; mobility-based exposure, incorporating individuals' spatiotemporal activities to capture dynamic environmental conditions; and AC & mobility-based exposure, an extension of the mobility-based approach that further integrates data on air-conditioning usage.
