From Board Games to Box Trainers: Gamified Feedback in Laparoscopy Training for Medical Students.

J Surg Res

September 2025

Department of Surgery, University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), Galveston, Texas; Department of Surgery, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts.

Introduction: Feedback plays a pivotal role in surgical training. Gamification offers a way to make the feedback process more efficient by automating and expediting feedback delivery, which might otherwise be difficult to provide. Prior data suggest that negative feedback may play a greater role in improving performance on laparoscopic skills tasks, whereas positive feedback may enhance learner satisfaction, confidence, and engagement.

Investigating Speech Intelligibility Capabilities of Electrical Auditory Stimulation.

Mil Med

September 2025

Aerospace Medicine and Vestibular Research Laboratory, Mayo Clinic Arizona, Scottsdale, AZ 85259, United States.

Introduction: In military settings, ear-worn communication systems and hearing protection have equal importance, but opposite purposes. It is crucial to provide clear communication signal free of noise that may also be hazardous to hearing. Electrical auditory stimulation is a mode of transmitting high fidelity speech information with an amplitude modulated electromagnetic signal that is sent transcutaneously through electrodes.

Hearing plays a key role not only in the perception of information from the environment and the formation of speech, but also in social construction, communication and the maintenance of important cognitive functions. At the same time, persistent hearing loss can lead to cognitive disorders and dementia, as well as central auditory dysfunction. Subjective methods of hearing research were used - pure tone threshold audiometry (PTA), speech audiometry in silence and noise; and objective diagnostics - recording of long-latency auditory evoked potentials (LLAEP).

Reinforcement learning (RL) offers a compelling account of how agents learn complex behaviors by trial and error, yet RL is predicated on the existence of a reward function provided by the agent's environment. By contrast, many skills are learned without external guidance, posing a challenge to RL's ability to account for self-directed learning. For instance, juvenile male zebra finches first memorize and then train themselves to reproduce the song of an adult male tutor through extensive practice.
