Article Abstract

Covering: 1950 to up to the end of 2024Natural products containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) feature at least two fused aromatic ring systems, conforming to Hückel's rule and representing an important class of secondary metabolites with a wide range of biological activities. Among them, the subtype of natural products containing tricyclic and greater than tricyclic systems has been neglected for a long time. This review summarizes the isolation, structural features, bioactivities, biosynthetic pathways, and chemical synthesis of this special subtype reported over the past decades. This review provides a current understanding of the tricyclic and hyper-PAHs represented by anthracene, phenanthrene, acenaphthalene, pyrene, fluoranthene, and tetraphene from organic, biosynthetic, and pharmacological perspectives.

The potential of PM to cause lung cancer has been well established; however, evidence regarding which specific components are responsible remains limited. We investigated dissolved organic matter (DOM) in PM using high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) and cellular DNA damage assays to elucidate molecular composition and sources of carcinogenic components. Our analysis revealed hundreds of genotoxic compounds, with condensed aromatic amines predominating in number, abundance, and contribution to overall genotoxicity.

This study investigated the effects of fermentable fiber and polyphenol supplementation on mood and cognition following rapid ascent to simulated 4300 m. Healthy adults (n = 13, 21 ± 3 years) participated in a randomized, placebo-controlled crossover study consisting of three, 2-week phases separated by ≥1 week. Food products containing the fiber and polyphenol supplement or placebo were consumed during each phase.

Research on worker exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during asphalt paving operations remains significantly limited, and regulatory frameworks governing such exposures are also insufficient. Previous studies have primarily focused on a limited number of major VOCs. However, this study employs high-resolution, high-performance Proton Transfer Reaction Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (PTR-ToF-MS) to comprehensively evaluate exposure levels to 25 different VOCs.

Background: Advanced-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with high tumour burden and portal vein tumour thrombus (PVTT) is usually associated with poor survival outcomes. Rapid tumour control usually benefits long-term outcomes, which could be hardly achieved by solely systematic targeted and immunotherapy in current guidelines. Hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy (HAIC) is reported as an effective intervention for rapid decrease of tumour burden.
