Article Abstract

As an emerging class of porous aromatic polymers, porphyrin-based covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been widely employed in assorted applications due to their unique electronic configurations and properties. Notably, three-dimensional (3D) COFs, characterized by porphyrin cores exposed along steric ordered nanochannels, exhibit great promise for solar energy conversion. However, the development of 3D porphyrin-based COFs continues to present a synthetic challenge, stemming from the scarcity of appropriate topotactic designs and appropriate building blocks. In this study, a series of 3D Por-An-COFs with a reasonable 2-fold lvt-b topology have been synthesized. The 3D architecture enables the periodic alignment of porphyrin units within the conjugated backbones, facilitating light harvesting and interactions between guest species and active centers. Consequently, the 3D Por-An-COF features superior photoresponsive characteristics, including high solar-to-chemical and solar-to-thermal conversion capabilities. In particular, the interfacial water evaporation system based on 3D Por-An-COF achieved an evaporation rate of 1.64 kg m h, and the related thermoelectric device generates an output voltage of 195 mV. This research not only extends the structural diversity of 3D porphyrin-based COFs for photoenergy conversion but also elucidates the intrinsic dimensionality-dependent photoresponsive behaviors, providing valuable insights for the development of advanced porphyrin-based photosensitizers for a wide range of applications.

Drawing inspiration from the hierarchical architecture of natural metalloenzymes, we present a biomimetic approach to create an efficient catalyst by engineering both first and second coordination spheres within a covalent organic framework (COF). The catalyst, Fe-TAPP-TT, was synthesized through solvothermal condensation of 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)porphyrin (TAPP) and thieno[3,2-]thiophene-2,5-dicarboxaldehyde (TT), followed by iron metallization. In this architecture, the Fe-porphyrin center serves as the primary active site (first coordination sphere), while the sulfur-rich TT linkers form a biomimetic "catalytic pocket" that functions as the second coordination sphere.

Three-dimensional (3D) covalent organic frameworks (COFs) represent promising photocatalytic platforms with accessible active sites, yet their development faces challenges in terms of structural diversity and synthetic complexity. Herein, a robust 3D metalloporphyrin COF with topology and 2-fold interpenetration is achieved by using high-connectivity metalloporphyrin, and different metal centers within the porphyrin units of 3D COFs lead to intriguing structural variations. Particularly, the 3D cobalt-porphyrin-based COF achieves efficient photocatalytic CO-to-CO conversion with a rate of 21 251.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are promising photocatalysts but are hindered by inherent limitations such as low interlayer charge mobility, restricted active site accessibility, and inefficient charge separation. Herein, we constructed a thiophene-porphyrin-based COF photocatalytic system, comprising a COF with thiophene-modified pore walls and a quasi-three-dimensional (3D) COF formed via in situ oxidative polymerization-generated polythiophene chains covalently linked to the COF skeleton. The knitting of 2D COF layers with conjugated polythiophene units endows the 3D COF with enhanced light absorption capability and improved conductivity by four orders of magnitude.

Water-soluble nanozymes have the potential to overcome the limitations of low catalytic efficiency of most heterogeneous nanozymes in aqueous solutions and further expand their applications in the biomedical field, but with significant synthetic challenges. Here we report an oxidase-mimicking water-soluble nanozyme based on zinc porphyrin-based covalent organic framework nanohydrogel (Zn-COF-NHG) for photocatalytic antibacterial. The in situ atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) on scaffold of Zn-COF results in the exfoliation of crystalline COF nanosheets and assembly into nanohydrogels in aqueous solution.

Lithium (Li) dendrite formation in Li metal batteries intrinsically challenges Coulombic efficiency (CE) and safety. While constructing an anode protective layer offers a potential solution for dendrite suppression, existing approaches are limited by insufficient molecular-level control over both Li and anion dynamics simultaneously. Herein, we construct a binary cooperative magnesium porphyrin-based covalent organic framework (Mg-Por-COF) protective layer designed for synergetic cation-anion regulation at the anode-electrolyte interface.
