Several aspects of the relationships between VME indicator taxa and associated fauna have been previously explored mainly on rocky habitat respect the soft bottom. However, the soft bottom hosts many VMEs indicator taxa for which the ecological role remained still unexplored. This habitat hosts many associated species, a lot of them also of commercial value making this habitat more vulnerable to fishing pressure. The present study investigates the variables that shape the distribution of associated fauna and their relationship with VME indicator species in the deep soft bottom of the Mediterranean Sea. Analyzing 74 ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) transects, VMEs indicator taxa and fish and crustacean density were extracted and analyzed together with environmental, morphological and anthropogenic variables. Through Redundancy Analysis (RDA), our findings reveal a clear relationship between several fish and crustacean species of commercial value and VME indicator taxa, like Isidella elongata and Pennatuloidea. By applying multivariate statistical approaches to an integrative dataset, the study provides a community-level perspective on the factors shaping fish and crustacean assemblages in potentially vulnerable habitats. The result highlights the necessity to better investigate the relationship among deep sea species in a wide prospectives to give powerful data for their conservation.

Balancing socio-economic development with environmental quality in estuaries requires reliable tools for ecological assessment and informed management. Although various biological and (geo)chemical indices have been formulated to evaluate ecological quality status (EcoQS), transitional systems such as estuaries remain challenging to assess due to steep natural gradients and intense anthropogenic pressures, which can compromise the effectiveness of conventional indices. This study applied a practical, multi-criteria sediment assessment to evaluate benthic EcoQS in the Sado estuary, SW Portugal - a socio-ecological system strongly influenced by human activity.

Deltaviruses are subviral agents of animals, which, in humans, require a hepadnavirus helper for transmission. The absence of deltavirus-like endogenous viral elements (δEVEs) has prevented an understanding of their evolution in deep time. By screening the representative genomes of all metazoans for endogenous delta antigen-like sequences, we report the discovery of 13 δEVEs in the genomes of five species of termites.

Increasing evidence indicates that the loss of soil microbial α-diversity triggered by environmental stress negatively impacts microbial functions; however, the effects of microbial α-diversity on community functions under environmental stress are poorly understood. Here, we investigated the changes in bacterial and fungal α- diversity along gradients of five natural stressors (temperature, precipitation, plant diversity, soil organic C and pH) across 45 grasslands in China and evaluated their connection with microbial functional traits. By quantifying the five environmental stresses into an integrated stress index, we found that the bacterial and fungal α-diversity declined under high environmental stress across three soil layers (0-20 cm, 20-40 cm and 40-60 cm).

Eukaryotic algae-dominated microbiomes thrive on the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) in harsh environmental conditions, including low temperatures, high light, and low nutrient availability. Chlorophyte algae bloom on snow, while streptophyte algae dominate bare ice surfaces. Genome imbalance, resulting from varying the dosage of individual chromosomes (aneuploidy), has a more detrimental effect than changes in complete sets of chromosomes (haploidy/polyploidy). This imbalance is likely due to disruptions in stoichiometry and interactions among macromolecular assemblies. Previous research has shown that aneuploidy causes global modulation of protein-coding genes (PCGs), microRNAs, and transposable elements (TEs), affecting both the varied chromosome (cis-located) and unvaried genome regions (trans-located) across various taxa.
