Article Abstract

Environmental pollution is a major concern, particularly in modern cities, due to its significant effects on human health and the global economy. These pollutants must be continuously monitored to prevent negative impacts on the environment. The scientific community has done in-depth studies on optimal environmental sensors from theory to practice in recent years. These sensors can detect the existence of hazardous gases and quantify the amounts in the surrounding environment. Since sensor applications are anticipated to be further expanded, examining the crucial types of sensors, their characteristics, difficulties, and significant applications is essential. In this paper, different sensing methods and sensing materials adopted for detecting environmental pollutants are reviewed, focusing on hazardous gases like nitrogen oxides (NO ), ammonia (NH), carbon monoxide (CO), and sulfur oxides (SO ). The working principle of sensing technology adopted for fabricating sensors, sensing materials used, and essential sensing parameters like sensitivity, operating temperature, and detection range are thoroughly analyzed.

Marine ecosystems, particularly estuaries, are increasingly threatened by anthropogenic pressures. The Odiel Estuary has suffered severe contamination from acid mine drainage and industrial activities. Since 1986, mitigation efforts have been implemented, yet their long-term ecological effectiveness remains under-evaluated.

Small glaciers situated in high mountainous areas are experiencing notable declines, characterized by unprecedented rates of ice loss in recent years. This study investigates the recent changes in surface elevation and mass loss occurring between 2010 and 2023 within the Alamkouh Glacier over three subperiods, one of the biggest glaciers in Iran and the Middle East. These assessments are derived from a combination of high-resolution LiDAR data in 2010 (with a spatial resolution of 20 cm) and multi-temporal surveys conducted using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in 2018, 2020, and 2023 (with spatial resolutions varied from 10 to 20 cm).

Surveillance monitoring of shallow groundwater revealed that redox conditions can vary on a small scale. Therefore, the aim of this study was to categorize redox conditions in the groundwater of Lower Saxony, Germany, and to analyze the spatial distribution and trends of parameters related to redox conditions during surveillance monitoring from 1957 to 2015 in Lower Saxony, Germany. Methodically, trends were considered by applying the Mann-Kendall test and redox conditions of groundwater were classified according to the scheme of Jurgens et al.

This study investigated the potential role of temporal, spectral, and binaural room-induced cues for the perception of virtual auditory distance. Listeners judged the perceived distance of a frontal source simulated between 0.5 and 10 m in a room via headphones, with eyes closed in a soundproof booth.

Sulfate Promotes Amine Salt Ozonation in Atmospheric Aerosols.

Low molecular weight amines promote sulfate (SO and HSO) formation through acid-base reactions, contributing to fine particulate matter (PM). Heterogeneous ozonation converts nontoxic amine salts into highly toxic products, yet the ozonation activation mechanism is unclear. This work reveals a sulfate-dominant ozonation mechanism of amine salts in fine PM by combining advanced mass spectrometry and ab initio calculation methods.
