Phase change materials (PCMs) can be utilized in buildings for peak load shifting in air conditioning systems, and the use of salt hydrate-based PCMs can reduce the cost of thermal energy storage devices. Glauber's salt is an economical salt hydrate PCM with a melting point of around 32 °C. However, the desired melting range typically falls between 18 and 22 °C for building air conditioning applications. Although many researchers have characterized Glauber's salt and its composites with modified melting points, enthalpy-temperature curves for composites of Glauber's salt and NaCl are unavailable. In this study, we report the melting and solidification enthalpy-temperature curves for two different composites of Glauber's salt and NaCl with a melting point of 21 °C obtained by the T-history method. Both composites contain NaCl to suppress the melting point, borax to reduce supercooling, and sodium polyacrylate as a thickener to enhance cyclic stability. The first composite with 12 wt.% NaCl demonstrated 139 kJ·kg of latent heat of fusion, and the second composite with 9 wt.% NaCl demonstrated 171 kJ·kg. Both the composites have high volumetric energy densities compared to their organic counterparts with similar melting points.

Polymer-derived ceramics are a versatile class of multifunctional materials synthesized the high-temperature treatment of a preceramic polymer. In this work, we report the synthesis of a vanadium carbide-embedded carbonaceous hybrid by pyrolyzing a modified preceramic polymer incorporating vanadium acetylacetonate in a polysilsesquioxane followed by hydrofluoric acid etching. The structural and microscopic characterisation confirmed the uniform distribution of nanoparticulate vanadium carbide in the matrix.

Understanding hydrogen bonding and ion-specific interactions in water, sodium sulfate (NaSO), and acetonitrile (ACN) systems remains challenging due to their complex, dynamic nature. Here, Raman spectroscopy is employed to probe hydrogen bonding networks and ion reorganization in NaSO aqueous solutions with different ACN concentrations. The results indicate that, at low ACN concentrations in the ternary solutions, hydrogen bonding between ACN and water molecules disrupts the original hydration structure of the ions, resulting in the formation of small ion clusters via electrostatic interactions.

NLR (Nod-like receptor) family pyrin domain containing protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome activation is key component of innate immune response and is implicated in many autoimmune conditions. Usnoflast is a novel, selective NLRP3-inflammasome inhibitor and is currently in Phase II for various indications including Ulcerative colitis. Here, we report the effect of usnoflast in several experimental models of intestinal inflammation, some of them for the first time for any NLRP3 inhibitor, which involves both innate and adaptive immune mechanisms.
