Article Abstract

Toxic organic pollutants and heavy metals (HMs) present in aquatic environments have been a global challenge for water purification, which is often difficult to address even with massive resources and energy consumption. Herein, a new strategy is proposed to achieve simultaneous pollutant removal and Ag recovery in an expanded water self-purification system based on Mo-SnS quantum dots (MSS QDs) with dual-reaction-center (DRC). The innovative discovery is that the electrons of pollutants are finally utilized by Ag and dissolved oxygen through the constructed interfacial process without any sacrificial agent or additional energy consumption. Especially for antibiotics, one of the typical emerging contaminants (ECs), the degradation rate reaches 100% in a very short time. In N environment, the Ag recovery rate even reaches 94%. It is estimated that the cost of wastewater treatment is only $0.01/m (USD), and it even comes with huge benefits from Ag recovery in this expanded water self-purification system. This work provides novel technical references for developing multifunctional and low-consumption water purification technologies in response to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Transformers have been successfully applied in the field of video-based 3D human pose estimation. However, the high computational costs of these video pose transformers (VPTs) make them impractical on resource-constrained devices. In this paper, we present a hierarchical plug-and-play pruning-and-recovering framework, called Hierarchical Hourglass Tokenizer (HOT), for efficient transformer-based 3D human pose estimation from videos.

Long COVID and Food Insecurity in US Adults, 2022-2023.

JAMA Netw Open

September 2025

Department of Medicine, Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia.

Importance: Long COVID (ie, post-COVID-19 condition) is a substantial public health concern, and its association with health-related social needs, such as food insecurity, remains poorly understood. Identifying modifiable risk factors like food insecurity and interventions like food assistance programs is critical for reducing the health burden of long COVID.

Objective: To investigate the association of food insecurity with long COVID and to assess the modifying factors of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participation and employment status.

Hydrothermal-based Wastewater Solids Management for Targeted Resource Recovery and Decarbonization in the Contiguous U.S.

Environ Sci Technol

The Grainger College of Engineering, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Urbana, Illinois 61801, United States.

Wastewater solids management is a key contributor to the operational cost and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs). This study proposes a 'waste-to-energy' strategy using a hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL)-based system to displace conventional energy- and emission-intensive practices. The proposed system directs HTL-produced biocrude to oil refineries and recovers regionally tailored nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers.

Substance misuse among college students continues to rise, with polysubstance use becoming increasingly common. Alcohol remains the most prevalent substance, with heavy episodic and high-quantity drinking linked to serious consequences, including injuries, assaults, and deaths. Concurrent use of alcohol and cannabis, as well as other illicit drugs, further compounds risks to health, safety, and academic functioning.
