Article Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the performance of Picterus Jaundice Pro (Picterus JP), a mobile health device for neonatal jaundice (NNJ) screening, in Mexican newborns.

Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted from January 2023 to June 2024 at a hospital in a resource-limited setting in Mexico. The main outcomes were Picterus JP measurements and total serum bilirubin (TSB) levels.

Results: A total of 177 term newborns, aged 1 to 14 days, were enrolled. Picterus JP showed a significant positive Spearman's rho correlation with TSB (ρ = .68), sensitivity of 85.7% and specificity of 80.1% to detect TSB ≥ 250 using Picterus cut off value of 202 µmol/L. However, it tended to underestimate higher bilirubin levels.

Conclusion: Picterus JP shows potential to be a useful tool for NNJ screening, particularly in resource-limited areas. Further validation across more diverse populations and clinical environments, alongside accuracy improvements, is necessary to enhance its utility and support wider implementation.Registered in ClinicalTrials.gov (https://clinicaltrials.gov/study/NCT06276582).

Background: The benefits of physical activity for frail older acutely hospitalized adults are becoming increasingly clear. To enhance opportunities for physical activity on geriatric wards, it is essential to understand the older adult's perspective.

Aim: The aim of the study was to explore the experiences and perceptions of physical activity among older adults during hospital stays on a geriatric ward.

Background: Post-viral syndromes, including long- and post-COVID, often lead to persistent symptoms such as fatigue and dyspnoea, affecting patients' daily lives and ability to work. The COVI-Care M-V trial examines whether interprofessional, patient-centred teleconsultations, initiated by general practitioners in cooperation with specialists, can help reduce symptom burden and improve care for patients.

Methods: To evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention under routine care conditions, a cluster-randomised controlled trial is being conducted.

Communities of plasmids as strategies for antimicrobial resistance gene survival in wastewater treatment plant effluent.

Plasmids facilitate antimicrobial resistance (AMR) gene spread via horizontal gene transfer, yet the mobility of genes in wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) resistomes remains unclear. We sequenced 173 circularised plasmids transferred from WWTP effluent into Escherichia coli and characterised their genetic content. Multiple multidrug-resistant plasmids were identified, with a significant number of mega-plasmids (>100 kb).

Cough is a common symptom of many respiratory diseases, and parameters such as frequency, intensity, type and duration play important roles in disease screening, diagnosis and prognosis. Among these, cough frequency is the most widely applied metric. In current clinical practice, cough severity is primarily assessed based on patients' subjective symptom descriptions in combination with semi-structured questionnaires.

Since 2022, an estimated 150000 to 200000 patients with heart failure (HF) in Germany have met the inclusion criteria for HF telemonitoring in accordance with the Federal Joint Committee's (G-BA) decision. Currently, only a few artificial intelligence (AI) applications are used in standard cardiovascular telemedicine care. However, AI applications could improve the predictive accuracy of existing telemedical sensor technology by recognising patterns across multiple data sources.
