Article Abstract

A simple, rapid, and efficient method was developed for simultaneous determination of 14 PBDEs and 10 NBFRs in animal-derived foods, utilizing gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) coupled with the QuEChERS sample preparation technique. The QuEChERS and GC-MS/MS parameters were carefully optimized for optimal performance. Animal-derived samples were extracted using 10 mL of n-hexane-saturated acetonitrile: Water (1,1, /v) and purified with novel -Sep + sorbent. The optimized method demonstrated excellent linearity, with correlation coefficients exceeding 0.997. Recovery rates for the target analytes in fish, chicken, pork, and beef ranged from 67.6 % to 104.8 %. The limits of detection (LOD) ranged from 3.2 to 62.9 ng/kg, while the limits of quantification (LOQ) varied from 10.7 to 207.6 ng/kg. This method was successfully applied to analyze 227 animal-derived food samples from markets in Guangzhou, China. The results demonstrated that the method is both effective and straightforward for analysis of PBDEs and NBFRs in complex food samples.

Rapid, low-cost, and visual nucleic acid detection methods are highly attractive for curbing colistin resistance spread through the food chain. CRISPR/Cas12a combined with recombinase-aided amplification (RAA) offers a one-pot, aerosol-free approach for visual detection. However, traditional one-pot systems often run Cas12a trans-cleavage in a buffer suitable for RAA, thus limiting Cas12a cleavage efficiency.

The emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) poses a significant threat to global public health, necessitating alternative therapeutic strategies. In this study, we isolated and characterized a novel lytic bacteriophage (phage), vB_EcoM_51, from poultry farm sewage and evaluated its potential against MDR . Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the phage exhibits morphological features typical of the family, including a polyhedral head (∼66.

7-ketocholesterol as a critical oxysterol: Impact on human health and safety in food systems.

J Steroid Biochem Mol Biol

Biochemistry and Phytochemistry Research Division, Jubilee Centre for Medical Research, Thrissur, Kerala 680005, India. Electronic address:

7-Ketocholesterol (7-KC) is a biologically active oxysterol formed through the oxidation of cholesterol, predominantly under conditions of oxidative stress. It is generated both enzymatically in specific tissues such as the brain and liver, and non-enzymatically via reactive oxygen species (ROS), especially in aging tissues and heat-processed animal-derived foods. 7-KC exerts multifaceted effects on human health, extending beyond lipid metabolism to disrupt glucose and amino acid utilization, impair mitochondrial function, and provoke endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress.
