Article Abstract

The shift toward chromium-free eco-leather manufacturing has spurred interest in biomass-based tanning agents. However, their suboptimal molecular size and poor solubility hinder effective leather penetration. In this study, biomass-derived tanning agents were developed from corncob hemicellulosic polysaccharides (CPs) with tailored molecular weights, isolated via alkali extraction and acid-alcohol precipitation, followed by partial epoxidation. This process yielded three epoxidized agents (CPs-GTE), which were characterized in terms of molecular structure, chemical composition, surface morphology, and particle size distribution. Leather tanned with CPs-GTE exhibited enhanced thermal stability (shrinkage temperature > 80 °C), mechanical strength (tensile strength ≥24.302 ± 2.79 MPa, tear strength ≥36.488 ± 1.08 N/mm), and thickness (≥ 50.226 %). Among the tested samples, CP3-GTE demonstrated the most superior overall performance, highlighting the crucial role of molecular weight in penetration efficiency. Soil degradation tests further confirmed the excellent biodegradability of CP3-GTE-tanned leather. These results demonstrate that epoxidized corncob polysaccharides are effective, eco-friendly tanning agents, offering a promising strategy for sustainable leather processing.

Dialdehyde polysaccharides (DAPs) were prepared as tanning agents via periodate oxidation, intentionally omitting ethanol precipitation to maintain molecular weight polydispersity, thus optimizing tanning performance. However, the presence of formaldehyde in these DAPs compromised their environmental sustainability. This study systematically explored the impact of polysaccharide structures on formaldehyde formation in DAPs.

Vegetable tannins (VTs) are natural polyphenolic compounds widely used in leather tanning as sustainable alternatives to chrome-based processes. Traditionally, only a limited number of commercially available tannins, such as mimosa, quebracho, and chestnut, are employed globally, often requiring long-distance transportation with associated environmental and economic costs. This review systematically explores recent advances (2015-2025) in the identification and evaluation of alternative VT sources derived from underutilized plant species in Africa and Asia.

Calixarenes are a structurally versatile class of macrocyclic compounds that exhibit broad functionality across pharmaceutical, analytical, industrial, and environmental domains. Their conformational flexibility and functionalize upper and lower rims facilitate selective host-guest interactions, enabling their use in targeted drug delivery systems with demonstrated antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and anticancer efficacy. In analytical chemistry, calixarene-based sensors have been integrated into colorimetric, fluorometric, potentiometric, and voltammetric platforms, offering high selectivity and low detection limits for analytes such as metal ions, nucleotides, and neurotransmitters.

The development of green chromium-free tanning agents continues to be actively researched as a prominent topic in the leather industry. Zirconium tanning agents have good tanning performance, but their permeability is poor. Halide perovskites, composed of metal ions and organic ligands, are metal-tunable nanomaterials.
