Article Abstract

Constructing functionalized covalent organic frameworks (COFs) through post-functionalization constitutes one of the most important approaches to applications, but is frequently plagued by limited reaction types, tedious synthesis of different precursors, and time-consuming screening of synthetic parameters for COFs. Moreover, their functions are difficult to change once the functionalities are covalently attached to COF skeletons. Herein, we report a macrocycle-based supramolecular strategy for variable noncovalent post-functionalization on the same COF platform like an interchangeable screwdriver. As a proof of concept, pillar[5]arene (P5A) with electron-rich cavity is incorporated into COF as macrocycle host to anchor different electron-deficient guests of various functions. Such a design allows tunable post-functionalization of COF through host-guest interactions for customized utilities, which has been demonstrated by using a series of guests including organic salts for iodine capture and cyano-based ligands for metal ion separation. Removing the guests enables recycling of COF, consecutive reinstallation of different guests, and continuous use for implementing expected tasks. This work establishes a general noncovalent approach to on-demand interchangeable post-functionalization of COFs.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are distinguished by their structural diversity, tunable electronic properties, and exceptional performance in various applications. Notably, the electron-donating ability of ligands significantly enhances the ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) processes within these frameworks, thereby promoting efficient charge migration. Herein, we developed two electron-rich macrocyclic ligands derived from phenothiazine- and phenoxazine-functionalized calix[3]arenes, alongside their corresponding cobalt-coordinated MOFs.

Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) has emerged as an effective strategy to overcome the traditional aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect, offering great promise for developing advanced luminescent materials. Synthetic macrocycles, owing to their preorganized cavities and well-defined geometries, provide unique platforms for constructing supramolecular assemblies with tunable photophysical properties. This review summarises recent advances in the construction of AIE-active supramolecular architectures through macrocycle-directed assembly, with a particular focus on systems based on tetraphenylethylene (TPE) and triphenylamine (TPA).

ConspectusCrystalline porous frameworks, such as covalent organic frameworks (COFs), metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), and hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), have demonstrated exceptional potential in diverse applications, including gas adsorption/separation, catalysis, sensing, electronic devices, etc. However, the building blocks for constructing ordered frameworks are typically limited to multisubstituted aromatic small molecules, and uncontrolled interpenetration has remained a long-standing challenge in the field. Shape-persistent macrocycles and molecular cages have garnered significant attention in supramolecular chemistry and materials science due to their unique structures and novel properties.

The construction of well-defined 3D charge-transfer (CT) co-crystals using new macrocyclic hosts to enable programmable functionality remains challenging due to the dimensional constraints imposed by conventional assembly strategies. Herein, we address this limitation using a new synthetic macrocycle named box[6]arene (B[6]A) with a flexible skeleton, which adopts two distinct conformations (B[6]Aα and B[6]Aβ). Crucially, the self-complementary and exo-wall CT co-assembly of B[6]A facilitates the construction of 3D macrocycle-based co-crystals (MCCs) with planar electron-deficient guests, including 1,2,4,5-tetracyanobenzene (TCNB), tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile (TFTN), and tetrachloroterephthalonitrile (TClTN).

To facilitate efficient and rapid quality evaluation of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) preparations, we introduced an innovative macrocycle-based fluorescence sensing strategy. Herein, an array of calixarene-based sensors was designed to assess the batch-to-batch consistency and precise feeding of raw materials of Yinxing Mihuan oral solution (YMOS), which is used to treat cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases in the clinic, highlighting the feasibility of the established supramolecular fluorescence sensing method. Using indicator displacement assay (IDA), the molecular recognition between calixarenes and the tested compounds from YMOS was converted into multi-fluorescence signals by extruding the indicators from their respective hosts, whose mechanisms were unveiled by theoretical calculations.
