Antarctic krill () is the central prey species in the Southern Ocean food web, supporting the largest and fastest-growing fishery in the region, managed by the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR). Climate change is threatening krill populations and their predators, while current catch limits do not take into account climate variability or krill population dynamics. In 2024, CCAMLR was unable to renew its spatial catch limits, highlighting the urgent need for improved management of the krill fishery to prevent any harm to the Southern Ocean ecosystem.

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients with liver cirrhosis represents a significant clinical challenge with high mortality rates. This study aimed to develop and validate a machine learning-based prediction model for 28-day mortality in AKI patients with liver cirrhosis using the MIMIC-IV database.

Methods: This retrospective study analyzed data from 4,168 AKI patients, including 601 with concurrent liver cirrhosis, from the MIMIC-IV database.

Modelling taxi drop-off decisions in FIFO lanes via survival and discrete choice analysis.

PLoS One

September 2025

College of Intelligent Science and Control Engineering, Jinling Institute of Technology, Nanjing, China.

Traffic congestion frequently occurs in the drop-off zones of large integrated passenger hubs, posing significant challenges to the efficient utilization of lane space. This study develops a First-In-First-Out (FIFO) taxi drop-off decision-making model, incorporating both static and dynamic Logit frameworks grounded in panel data analysis. The model accounts for heterogeneity across vehicles, temporal variations, and spatial factors influencing drop-off decisions.

Knowledge distillation (KD) aims to transfer knowledge from a large-scale teacher model to a lightweight one, significantly reducing computational and storage requirements. However, the inherent learning capacity gap between the teacher and student often hinders the sufficient transfer of knowledge, motivating numerous studies to address this challenge. Inspired by the progressive approximation principle in the Stone-Weierstrass theorem, we propose expandable residual approximation (ERA), a novel KD method that decomposes the approximation of residual knowledge into multiple steps, reducing the difficulty of mimicking the teacher's representation through a divide-and-conquer approach.
