Article Abstract

In April 2024, following the annual International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) ratification vote on newly proposed taxa, the phylum was expanded by 1 new order, 1 new family, 6 new subfamilies, 34 new genera and 270 new species. One class, two orders and six species were renamed. Seven families and 12 genera were moved; ten species were renamed and moved; and nine species were abolished. This article presents the updated taxonomy of as currently accepted by the ICTV, providing an essential annual update on the classification of members of this phylum that deepen understandings of their evolution, and supports critical public health measures for virus identification and tracking.

There is increasing evidence that mobile genetic elements can drive the emergence of pathogenic fungal species by moving virulence genes horizontally. The 14 kbp transposon was shown to move the necrotrophic effector, horizontally between wheat pathogens, namely , , and . All three species utilize the ToxA protein to infect wheat.

Viruses depend on their hosts for completing their life cycle, and a better understanding of virus replication can inform therapeutic strategies. Using the Orsay virus- experimental platform, we identified by a forward genetic screen the host gene (renamed ) as a novel host factor critical for Orsay virus replication. Three distinct mutations of each resulted in a >1,000-fold reduction in Orsay viral load, demonstrating a pro-viral function of had no previously described function in , but in the absence of viral infection, deletion of the locus by CRISPR/Cas9 led to a reduction in brood size and a shortened lifespan.

The growing threat of fungal infections, driven by increasing drug resistance, has become a major global health concern. Candidiasis, a common human infection, is associated with high mortality, particularly in invasive cases. Among non- (NAC) species, (renamed ) is of clinical importance because of its intrinsic resistance to fluconazole, complicating treatment options.

The enhancement of cell motility by bioactive molecules such as growth factors, hormones, and tissue factors is pivotal in cancer invasion and metastasis. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying this enhancement remain incompletely understood. In this study, we demonstrate that hepatoblastoma HepG2 cell motility is significantly increased following hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) treatment, as assessed by phagokinetic track assays, Transwell assays, and scratch assays.

In March 2025, following the annual International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) ratification vote, newly proposed taxa were added to those under the mandate of the Plant Viruses Subcommittee. In brief, 1 new order, 3 new families, 6 new genera, 2 new subgenera and 206 new species were created. Some taxa were reorganized.
