Adult spawners are key contributors to fish population dynamics, and thus understanding their life history is essential for effective population management and conservation. The radiogenic Sr isotope ratios (Sr/Sr) and ring numbers of adult spawners' sagitta otoliths were measured to determine the habitat use strategy of ayu Plecoglossus altivelis. Six groups of habitat use were identified based on profiles of the otolith Sr/Sr ratio, indicating high contributions of wild ayu (87.2%) and upper-to-middle mainstem habitats for spawning populations. Otolith ring number analyses showed that an early hatch date led to an early river entry and a larger fish size. The upper- and middle-segment (mainly mainstem) residents had earlier hatching and river entry dates than the tributary residents, with middle-segment residents having the largest fish size. These results indicate that early hatched and early river-entering ayu preferentially occupied mainstem habitats and grew large, whereas later-hatched and later-river-entering ayu tended to avoid mainstem habitats and enter tributaries as growth sites. This study can contribute to future habitat conservation efforts and fishery resource management for ayu.

The streams of Alaska's Brooks Range lie within a vast (~14M ha) tract of protected wilderness and have long supported both resident and anadromous fish. However, dozens of historically clear streams have recently turned orange and turbid. The Anqing-Wuhu mainstem segment in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River serves as a critical habitat for diverse species, where the ecological quality of floodplain wetlands directly governs the stability of the entire ecosystem. Utilizing 30-meter resolution Landsat satellite imagery from 1994 to 2022, we classified the floodplain wetlands in the Anqing-Wuhu mainstem segment in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River using fractional vegetation coverage (FVC). Through dynamic degree analysis and transition matrices method, we quantified vegetation cover transitions across different FVC tiers and analyzed their spatiotemporal variations.

The frequent detection of emerging organic pollutants in the surface water of the Yangtze River poses a threat to ecological health, and differences exist in ecological risks in different regions, which are related to the socio-economic development of cities along the Yangtze River. To comprehensively analyze the pollution characteristics of new pollutants in the surface waters of the Yangtze River and the key factors affecting their ecological risks, this review study analyzed the data on pollutants in the Yangtze River Region from the published literature over the past 20 years. First, we used the ecological risk assessment strategy to screen the polluted areas that require attention and prioritized new pollutants, followed by revealing the links between urban social development and pollutant occurrence.

The Lanzhou section of the Yellow River mainstem is a typical area for vegetation restoration in the ecologically fragile region of Northwest China. The spatiotemporal differences in Net Primary Productivity (NPP) of vegetation in this area serve as an important criterion for measuring the effectiveness of assessing vegetation growth. We analyze the spatiotemporal differentiation characteristics and driving mechanisms of NPP in the northern and southern mountain along the Lanzhou section of the Yellow River mainstream from 2000 to 2020 with the methods of the CASA model, Sen-MK trend analysis, and geographical detector.

Global restoration and conservation of freshwater biodiversity are represented in practice by works such as the Klamath River Renewal Project (KRRP), the largest dam removal and river restoration in the United States, which has reconnected 640 river kilometers. With dam removals, many biological outcomes remain understudied due to a lack of pre-impact data and complex ecosystem recovery timeframes. To avoid this, we created the KRRP molecular library, an environmental specimen bank, for long-term curation of environmental nucleic acids collected from the restoration project.
