Microplastics (MPs) are persistent pollutants that can adsorb contaminants, facilitating their accumulation in aquatic ecosystems. The presence of UV filters (UVFs) such as benzophenone-3 (BP3) and octocrylene (OC), exacerbates this issue, particularly in coastal areas. This study presents an innovative dual-method approach combining high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) and differential pulse adsorptive stripping voltammetry (DPAdSV) to assess the adsorption of UVFs on polyethylene (PE), a widely found polymer in aquatic environments. Adsorption kinetics were analysed using pseudo-first-order (PFOM) and pseudo-second-order (PSOM) models, revealing a higher equilibrium sorption capacity for OC due to its stronger hydrophobic interactions with PE. A central composite design (CCD) was employed to enhance resources efficiency in experimentation and controlled experiments exposed the materials to both pure fresh water and synthetic seawater. The results indicate a higher adsorption affinity of OC on PE than BP3, attributed to its high octanol-water partition coefficient (log Kow 6.88) and stronger hydrophobic interactions. Exposure time was the most influential variable across both media, while pH and temperature had a significant effect on BP3 adsorption in synthetic seawater. Hydrophobic partitioning, aided by van der Waals forces, was identified as the dominant interaction mechanism for both UVFs, with π-π and electrostatic interactions playing minimal roles due to the nature of the polymer. The study provides new insights into how polymer-pollutant interactions vary across environmental conditions and offers a novel voltammetric alternative for in-situ UVFs monitoring.

Hypothesis: Gas hydrate formation in sediments is influenced by the availability of gas-water interfacial areas, which governs gas-water interactions. The surface wettability of sediment particles is expected to affect the spatial distribution of water within the pore space, thereby altering the extent of gas-liquid contact. Consequently, by tuning the wettability heterogeneity of the sediment, the spatial distribution of pore water can be regulated, which in turn influences the gas-water interactions and the kinetics of gas hydrate formation.

This study investigates how hydrophobic and hydrophilic modifications at the C-terminus of the base peptide, KFEFEFKFK (KbpK), affect the hydrogel macroscopic properties. By the incorporation of phenylalanine (F, hydrophobic) and lysine (K, hydrophilic) residues, four variants, KbpK-K, KbpK-F, KbpK-KF, and KbpK-FK, were designed and evaluated. pH-concentration phase diagrams and Fourier transform infrared confirmed clear links showing how peptide hydrophobicity and charge influence β-sheet formation and macroscopic phase behavior.

Different starch crystal structures significantly influence meat product quality, though their specific impacts on myofibrillar protein (MP) functionality remain unclear despite industry demand for optimized ingredients. This study compared how potato, corn, mung bean, and pea starches affect MP properties in minced pork. Our findings reveal that starch-protein interactions fundamentally regulate MP gel and emulsion properties through the following mechanisms: First, starch promotes protein aggregation by enhancing hydrophobic interactions and disulfide bond formation, affecting gel network crosslinking.

Polysaccharides and polyphenols are major bioactive constituents of plant-based foods, and their efficacy is often modulated by intermolecular interactions. In this study, non-covalent binary complexes of Hovenia dulcis polysaccharides (HDPs) and quercetin were synthesized via molecular self-assembly. Structural characterization confirmed the successful non-covalent association of quercetin onto alcohol-precipitated HDP fractions-HDPs30, HDPs50, and HDPs70.
