Article Abstract

The ability to tell where sound sources are in space is ecologically important for spatial awareness and communication in multisource environments. While hearing aids and cochlear implants (CIs) can support spatial hearing for some users, this ability is not routinely assessed clinically. The present study compared sound source localization for a 200-ms speech-shaped noise presented using real sources at 18° intervals from -54° to +54° azimuth and virtual sources that were simulated using amplitude panning with sources at -54° and +54°. Participants were 34 adult CI or electric-acoustic stimulation users, including individuals with single-sided deafness or aided acoustic hearing. The pattern of localization errors by participant was broadly similar for real and virtual sources, with some modest differences. For example, the root mean square (RMS) error for these two conditions was correlated at  = .89 ( < .001), with a mean RMS elevation of 3.9° for virtual sources. These results suggest that sound source localization with two-speaker amplitude panning may provide clinically useful information when testing with real sources is infeasible.

The objectives were to investigate the culture-related experiences and perceptions of dental and allied dental students in the United States (US) and Canada who self-identified in response to a survey question as American Indian/First Nation-Indigenous/Hawaiian Native (AI), Black/African American/Canadian American/African (Black), Hispanic/Latinx (HL), Middle Eastern (ME), East Asian/Southeast Asian/South Asian (AA), White/European (White) or multiracial (M). The comparisons focused specifically on experiences of biases/inequities related to systemic factors (policies/practices) and personal discrimination/harassment, and on perceptions of the cultural climate and climate-related consequences, having a sense of belonging and culture-related clinical competence.

Feline calicivirus (FCV) is an important and highly prevalent pathogen of cats that causes acute infectious respiratory disease. Here it is shown in vitro that FCV induces the production of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) through the MEK1-ERK1/2 signaling pathway. Screening of FCV proteins revealed that FCV non-structural protein VPg enhanced COX-2 mRNA expression and protein production in CRFK cells in a concentration-dependent manner.

Background: To invade target cells, Trypanosoma cruzi metacyclic forms engage distinct sets of surface and secreted molecules that interact with host components. Serine-, alanine-, and proline-rich proteins (SAP) comprise a multigene family constituted of molecules with a high serine, alanine and proline residue content. SAP proteins have a central domain (SAP-CD) responsible for interaction with and invasion of mammalian cells by metacyclic forms.
