Introduction: Pseudomelanosis duodeni (PD) is a rare condition characterized by multiple pigmented speckles in the duodenum. It is typically seen in adults and has been associated with chronic kidney disease, hypertension, iron deficiency anemia, diabetes mellitus, and the use of medications like oral iron, hydralazine, furosemide, and hydrochlorothiazide. While oral iron is common, only one documented PD has been associated with intravenous (IV) iron supplementation.
Case Presentation: A 69-year-old female with multiple comorbidities, including stage 4 chronic kidney disease and hypertension, presented with persistent nausea and vomiting. An esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) revealed diffuse, dark speckling throughout the duodenal mucosa. Biopsies confirmed PD through Perl Prussian blue and Fontana-Masson staining, which detected iron in black/brown pigmentations within macrophages. The patient received a 5-week course of weekly intravenous iron supplementation 6 months before presentation. Previous EGD 7 and 5 years earlier showed no evidence of PD despite the patient being on sulfur-containing antihypertensive medications. This case suggests a likely interplay between IV iron and sulfur-containing medications in PD development.
Conclusion: While PD has been associated with multiple comorbidities and certain medications, the causal mechanism remains unclear. PD likely entails defective iron transport and iron sulfide accumulation within duodenal macrophages. This case highlights the potential role of IV iron supplementation in PD development, even in the absence of oral iron intake. PD is regarded as a benign condition with no specific guidelines for treatment or follow-up, but a biopsy is crucial to rule out other differential diagnoses and avoid unwanted interventions.

The activation of methane and other gaseous hydrocarbons at low temperature remains a substantial challenge for the chemistry community. Here, we report an anaerobic photosystem based on crystalline borocarbonitride (BCN) supported Fe-O nanoclusters, which can selectively functionalize C-H bonds of methane, ethane, and higher alkanes to value-added organic chemicals at 12 °C. Scanning transmission electron microscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy corroborated the ultrafine FeOOH and FeO species in Fe-O clusters, which enhanced the interfacial charge transfer/separation of BCN as well as the chemisorption of methane.

A novel electrochemical/Fe dual-catalyzed perfluoroalkylation-thiolization of alkenes under mild conditions has been developed. This protocol utilizes commercially available reagents, cheap electrodes, and simple equipment. Diverse polyfunctionalized perfluoroalkyl-substituted derivatives were successfully obtained in a direct and efficient way with a broad substrate scope and excellent functional group tolerance.

The cytosolic iron-sulfur cluster assembly (CIA) targeting complex maturates over 30 cytosolic and nuclear Fe-S proteins, raising the question of how a single complex recognizes such a diverse set of clients. The discovery of a C-terminal targeting complex recognition (TCR) peptide in up to 25% of CIA clients provided a clue to substrate specificity, yet the molecular and energetic basis for this interaction remained unresolved. By integrating computational and biochemical approaches, we show that the TCR peptide binds a conserved interface between the Cia1 and Cia2 subunits of the targeting complex, even in the absence of the Fe-S cluster.

Sulfidized zero-valent iron (S-ZVI) holds promise in the remediation of chlorinated hydrocarbons. However, S-ZVI is susceptible to corrosion in aquifers with elevated dissolved oxygen (DO) levels. This study demonstrates, for the first time, that a trade-off between the passivation and oxidative corrosion of aged S-ZVI can be achieved in the presence of silicate to promote its dechlorination performance on trichloroethylene.

Research suggests that Problem Gambling (PG) may result from maladaptive emotional regulation strategies aimed at escaping emotions and stress caused by negative life events and trauma. The current study, aimed to examine the effect of exposure to the mass trauma of October 7, 2023 terror attack and the consequent Swords of Iron war in Israel, and difficulties in emotional regulation on PG. We utilized longitudinal data of self-reports in the Problem Gambling Severity Index collected before the terror attack (April 2022) and during the Swords of Iron war (December 2023, March 2024, June 2024; N = 899) from a large sample of adult Jewish Israelis.
