Article Abstract

The development of decimeter-length organic crystals that remain elastic, functional, and machinable at extremely low temperatures, such as in liquid nitrogen (LN) environments, is a great challenge. Here, we report two novel elastic organic crystals, 1 and 2, derived from mono-benzene compounds. Crystals 1 are elastically bendable with decimeter-scale length (>10 cm) and exhibit better elastic bending ability at LN temperature compared to room temperature. In contrast, centimeter-length crystals 2 show reduced elasticity at LN temperature. Notably, crystals 1 can be cut and stripped at LN temperature. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the cryogenic machinability of organic crystals. By crystallographic analyses of 1 and 2, intermolecular interactions are shown to be responsible for their distinct crystal habits and cryogenic machinability. In addition, after stripping, crystals 1 exhibit programmable optical waveguide properties that vary in proportion to the crystal width and thus have the potential for applications as tunable wavelength modulators, capable of real-time two-dimensional motion detection in cryogenic environments. This material not only advances the field of flexible organic crystals but also opens up new possibilities for the development of smart materials that can be used under extreme conditions.

Coordination polymers (CPs) are versatile materials formed by metal ions and organic ligands, offering a broad range of structural and functional possibilities. Phosphonates and phosphinates are particularly attractive ligands for CPs due to their multiple binding sites, varied coordination geometries, and ability to form robust network structures. Phosphonates, considered harder ligands, form strong bonds with hard metals such as Fe, while phosphinates offer additional versatility due to the varied pendant groups on phosphorus.

This research work details the use of a molecular hybridization technique to create a library of four series of hydrazineyl-linked imidazo[1,2-]pyrimidine-thiazole derivatives. The structure of one of the final products, K2, was validated using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Twenty-six novel hybrid molecules (K1-K26) were synthesized and tested for activity against the H37Rv strain.

Reaction of LZnI [L = BuC(N-DIPP), DIPP = 2,6-Pr-CH] with KC in the presence of cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene (cAAC) affords a stable radical complex [LZn(cAAC)] (3). Single-crystal structural analysis of 3 shows a short Zn─C bond and concomitant elongation of C─N bond within the cAAC ligand, indicating a significant π-backbonding from the metal to the cAAC ligand. EPR spectroscopy and DFT calculations reveal that the spin density is mainly localized on the carbenic carbon atom, with a small portion on the zinc center.

Bullvalene-Containing Molecular Glasses.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

Department of Chemistry, University of York, Heslington, York, YO10 5DD, UK.

Organic molecular glasses are attractive matrices to disperse active ingredients in pharmaceuticals or electronic devices. Typically, they i) have lower glass transition temperatures than inorganic or polymeric glasses, making them easier to process, and ii) are less prone to phase segregation from other organic active materials. However, there is a dearth of functional groups that are known to induce glass formation in preference to crystallization.

Quadrupolar NMR crystallography guided crystal structure prediction (QNMRX-CSP) is a method for determining the crystal structures of organic solids. To date, our two previous QNMRX-CSP studies have relied upon on Cl solid-state NMR (SSNMR) spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Monte-Carlo simulated annealing (MC-SA), and dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT-D2∗) calculations for the determination of crystal structures for organic HCl salts with known crystal structures, in order to benchmark the method and subject it to blind tests. Herein, we apply QNMRX-CSP for the de novo crystal structure determination of L-alaninamide HCl (L-Ala-NH), for which no crystal structure has been reported, using Cl SSNMR and PXRD data for structural prediction and refinement, along with C and N SSNMR data for subsequent structural validation.
