Article Abstract

The conversion of CO into carbon-based fuels and chemicals via the electrocatalytic CO reduction reaction (CORR) offers an attractive route to reducing the CO emission for carbon neutrality. Currently, high-purity CO gas has been widely used as the feedstock for most of the CORR studies, while CO sources with a typically low concentration impose the extra cost for CO capture and purification steps. The direct utilization of low-concentration CO for the CORR is a promising approach to substantially address this problem. In this Perspective, we first highlight the prominent advantages of direct electroreduction of low-concentration CO. Then we focus on the summary of several important design strategies for CORR in diluted CO and gas impurities-containing CO atmosphere. Finally, we propose personal outlooks on future challenges and some opportunities for this fascinating research field.

Electrochemical CO reduction (CORR) to carbon monoxide (CO) offers a sustainable pathway for carbon utilization, yet challenges remain in terms of improving selectivity and activity. Herein, we report a Ni/NC catalyst synthesized via a milling - pyrolysis method, in which Ni particles anchored on nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) are electrochemically activated under an Ar atmosphere, leading to their structural evolution into single-atom Ni sites. After activation in Ar atmosphere, the current density nearly doubles (from ≈30 to ≈60 mA cm), and concurrently, the Faradaic efficiency of CO stays at ∼90% with the potential set to -0.

During the electrochemical conversion of CO to acetate on copper-based catalysts, the electrolyte concentration plays a crucial role in acetate selectivity. However, the correlation between the electrolyte concentration and the local microenvironment as well as the reaction kinetics remains unclear. In this work, we report for the first time the impact of KOH concentration on the solvent structure and reaction kinetics for CO reduction to acetate using advanced computational methods.

Sodium borohydride (NaBH) is considered as an outstanding hydrogen generation and storage material, whereas its widespread commercial application remains hindered by prohibitively high production cost and unsatisfied yield in the current production process. Electrochemical metaborate reduction reaction is a promising method to realize the low-cost and effective NaBH production, where the *H generation and the inhibition of HH coupling are critical but still remain challenging for suppressing competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, a core-shell structure with manganese oxide as a core and manganese single atom coordinated by nitrogen on the carbon substrate as a shell (MnO@Mn-N-C) was synthesized, where Mn-N-C enabled to boost water dissociation and electron donating as well as suppress HH coupling, thereby enhancing directed hydrogenation of reaction intermediate to generate NaBH.

The rising global energy demand has accelerated fossil fuel consumption, leading to an increase in CO emissions, the primary cause of the greenhouse effect. The CO electroreduction reaction (CORR) offers a green, sustainable solution to convert CO into valuable chemicals and energy, which is crucial for achieving carbon neutrality. However, the CORR faces significant hurdles, including its complex reaction pathways, low selectivity (due to CO's stability and diverse products), competition with the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at high overpotentials, and challenges with catalyst stability and mass transport.

A dual and simultaneous modulation of fluorescence intensity and electrochemical current induced by plasmon activation is demonstrated using a combination of electrochemical (SECM) and fluorescence microscopies, employing fluorescent redox monolayers grafted onto gold nanoparticles. The observed electrochemical and optical responses are fully consistent with a direct hole injection from the plasmonically excited metallic nanoparticles into the grafted monolayer. In particular, an unprecedented fluorescence intensity enhancement occurs upon simultaneous electroreduction at the tip and plasmon activation, whereas each process taken separately leads to a fluorescence quenching.
