Article Abstract

Immunotherapy is one of the most promising approaches for cancer management, as it utilizes the intrinsic immune response to target cancer cells. Normally, the human body uses its immune system as a defense mechanism to detect and eliminate foreign objects, including cancer cells. However, cancers develop a 'switch off' mechanism, known as immune checkpoint proteins, to evade immune surveillance and suppress immune activation. Therefore, significant efforts have been made to develop the strategies for stimulating immune responses against cancers. Among these, the use of extracellular vesicles (EVs) to enhance the anti-tumor immune response has emerged as a particularly promising approach in cancer management. EVs possess several unique properties that elevate the potency in modulating immune responses. This review article provides a comprehensive overview of recent advances in this field, focusing on the strategic usage of EVs to overcome tumor-induced immune tolerance. We discuss the biogenesis and characteristics of EVs, as well as their potential applications in medical contexts. The immune mechanisms within the tumor microenvironment and the strategies employed by cancers to evade immune detection are explored. The roles of EVs in regulating the tumor microenvironment and enhancing immune responses for immunotherapy are also highlighted. Additionally, this article addresses the challenges and future directions for the development of EV-based nanomedicine approaches, aiming to improve cancer immunotherapy outcomes with greater precision and efficacy while minimizing off-target effects.

The singular forms of programmed cell death (PCD), including pyroptosis, apoptosis, and necroptosis, are inadequate for comprehensively elucidating the complex pathological mechanisms underlying ischemic diseases. PANoptosis is a unique lytic, innate immune, and inflammatory cell death pathway, initiated by innate immune sensors and driven by caspases and RIPKs through PANoptosome complexes. In diseases like cerebral ischemia, retinal ischemia, myocardial ischemia, renal ischemia, and spinal cord ischemia, targeting key regulatory factors of PANoptosis can help mitigate tissue damage.

Roman Catholic Religious Affiliation and Reactions to the Initial Stage of the COVID-19 Pandemic in Poland.

The present study examined responses to COVID-19 at the beginning of the pandemic, April 2020, among a representative sample of 880 Poles. Participants described their religious beliefs, their emotional reactions to the pandemic, the changes they had made in their behavior since the onset of the pandemic, and their political orientation (left-right). Roman Catholics felt more threatened by the pandemic than non-believers, and Catholics reacted more strongly to the pandemic than non-believers in terms of feeling scared, paralyzed by fear, panicked, fearful, sad, woebegone, and lost, whereas there were no such differences on other emotional reactions.

Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is an acute immune-mediated inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculopathy of the peripheral nerves often provoked by a preceding upper respiratory or gastrointestinal infection. Guillain-Barré Syndrome usually presents with symmetrical lower limb ascending weakness and decreased deep tendon reflexes. Here, we describe a case of an uncommon presentation of GBS presenting with upper extremity neuropathy and cranial nerve palsy in a 36-year-old Caucasian Army pilot.
