Purpose: To investigate the relationship between serum biochemical variables and corneal biomechanics in healthy young adults.
Methods: A total of 1645 healthy university students were included. Every student underwent an ophthalmologic examination by Corvis ST to measure the corneal biomechanics and a blood examination to evaluate the alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), urea, creatinine, and uric acid (UA) levels. Canonical correlation analysis (CCA) was conducted to assess their relationship.
Results: A significant relationship between serum biochemical variables and corneal biomechanics was found in both men and women. For men, the canonical correlation identified an association between the time of the first applanation (A1t), time of the second applanation (A2t), time of the highest concavity (HC-t), deflection amplitude of the highest concavity (HC-DeflA), and biomechanically corrected intraocular pressure (bIOP) with ALT, AST, urea, and UA (r = 0.235, P = 0.03). For women, a significant relationship between A1t, A2t, and bIOP with ALT and UA was found (r = 0.187, P < 0.01).
Conclusions: Elevated levels of ALT and UA were associated with softer corneas with greater elasticity and viscidity. The study provides novel evidence for the relationship between serum biochemical variables and ocular changes.
Translational Relevance: These findings may help clinicians perform adequate preoperative evaluations when performing corneal surgery on patients with liver or kidney disorders, as well as helping public health practitioners understand serum biochemical variables of corneal changes in healthy people.

Introduction: This study examined the impacts of different negative pressure cupping therapies (PCT) on pain relief, functional recovery, and inflammatory regulation in delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) after high-intensity exercise, with the aim of clarifying the dose-effect relationship.
Methods: In this study, 55 healthy male participants aged 18-25 were selected and divided into 5 groups: the control group (CTR; = 11) and NPCT groups at different levels (-25 kPa, -35 kPa, -45 kPa, and -55 kPa; = 11 in each group). A high-intensity protocol, which included 6 sets of lunges, squats, and squat jumps, was adopted to induce DOMS in the quadriceps femoris.

Recent years have seen advances in clinical biochemistry of domestic animals which have highlighted comparative differences between species and have also identified fundamental aspects of the biochemical mechanisms in physiological conditions and disease, that have implications across species, including human, health and welfare. From investigations in diverse species using biochemical, immunological, proteomic and metabolomic approaches a series of species particularities and unexpected results for some biomarkers have been made. These observations cover (1) the differences between species in the acute phase protein (APP) response to infection and inflammation; (2) the non-hepatic synthesis and release in the mammary gland, adipose tissue and intestine of APP (3) the response of haptoglobin (HP) as a biomarker for stress; (4) observations in non-mammalian species related to hemopexin and HP; (5) the response of bile acids in milk to mastitis; (6) barley serine protease inhibitors being identified in bovine faeces; (7) alkaline phosphatase being present in bovine nasal secretion; (8) saliva findings with analytes such as adenine deaminase showing different activity between saliva and serum and a detergent-like surfactant protein, latherin being found in equine saliva and sweat and (9) serum enzymes and selective muscle protein reaction of Atlantic salmon as an example of the differences in biochemistry between terrestrial and aquatic species.
