Article Abstract

Understanding biodiversity is essential for preserving the stability of river ecosystems. However, the impact of landscape configurations and seasonal variations on biodiversity within undammed river ecosystems remains unexplored. Therefore, we selected the Chishui River-a naturally flowing tributary of the upper Yangtze River-for a survey of periphytic algae. The present study focuses on the seasonal fluctuations in the -diversity of periphytic algae within the Chishui River and its correlation with the surrounding landscape patterns. Our findings indicate that there is a substantial influence of seasonal variations on the community structure and -diversity of these algae within the Chishui River ecosystem. Concurrently, we observed that the turnover component predominantly contributes to -diversity. In light of these findings, we recommend that conservation measures be implemented across the entire Chishui River basin to safeguard the regional biodiversity. Redundancy analysis elucidated that water temperature, conductivity, and pH were the primary environmental drivers shaping the structure of periphytic algal communities. Furthermore, additional analyses using a random forest model indicated that landscape fragmentation and complexity were key determinants of -diversity in algal communities. Notably, the number of landscape patches was strongly correlated with the -diversity of periphytic algae. It is important to highlight that maintaining an optimal balance between the number of patches and their size is crucial for enhancing the ecosystem's capacity to preserve biodiversity. In summary, our findings provide insights into the interplay between biodiversity and land-use practices within complex riverine environments, thereby offering a scientific foundation for the conservation and management of these ecosystems.

Understanding the differences in community structure, assembly processes, and environmental responses among aquatic multi-trophic communities is essential for effective ecological management but remains limited. To fill this gap, we proposed an ecological management framework integrating key drivers, species interactions, and assembly mechanisms across trophic levels, supported by the statistical methods (VPA, PCA, CCA, RDA, Bioenv, SEM) and ecological models (null model, neutral community model, co-occurrence network) using the Minjiang River as a case study. The results indicated that the impact factors that affected the distribution, dominant species and diversities varied significantly among different communities.

Large amounts of the cesium-137 (Cs) released into the atmosphere during the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident in March 2011 had deposited on land, especially in Fukushima Prefecture. The long-term persistent Cs contamination of freshwater fish has resulted in fishing activities being restricted or suspended in some rivers and lakes, mainly in the central to eastern areas of Fukushima Prefecture. The ayu Plecoglossus altivelis, an important inland resource in Japan, is one of the species for which fishing activities are suspended.

A coupled hydraulic-ecological model for simulating periphytic algal detachment in water delivery canals.

State Key Laboratory of Water Resources Engineering and Management, Wuhan University, Wuhan, 430072, China.

In water delivery canals, aging periphytic algae can detach extensively, causing severe clogging and water quality deterioration. However, current research lacks a clear understanding of the hydraulic threshold for periphytic algal detachment. To fulfill this gap, two hydraulic scouring experiments of varying durations were conducted to investigate the effects of water velocity on periphytic algae growing on concrete substrates, and a new algal dynamic model considering detachment threshold and diminishing returns (DDR model) was proposed.

Clear-cutting of forests with little or no regard for riparian buffers alters the local abiotic habitat of streams within and downstream of clear-cuts by increasing temperature, incident light, suspended sediments and resource inputs such as carbon and inorganic nutrients. It is also well documented that streams with narrow or non-existent riparian buffers affect local stream ecosystem processes. Here, we ask whether ecosystem processes can also be affected downstream of clear-cuts.

Periphytic algae is an important primary producer in the river ecosystem, and it is one of the important indicators for the monitoring and evaluation of river water ecology. As a typical plateau river, the assembly process of the algae community in the Yarlung Zangbo River is still unclear. In May 2022 and July and September 2023, algae samples were collected, and water environmental factors were determined in the lower reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River.
