Adsorption and Protection of Environmental DNA (eDNA) on Polymer and Silica Surfaces.

Environ Sci Technol

September 2025

Environmental Systems Science Department, ETH Zürich, Universitätstrasse 16, 8092 Zurich, Switzerland.

The interactions of environmental DNA (eDNA) with microplastics (MPs) in aquatic ecosystems are influenced by water chemistry and the surface properties of plastics, impacting the fate of genetic material. While MPs' fate and transport have been studied extensively, the adsorption of eDNA onto polymer surfaces and its persistence remain less understood. Here, we systematically studied eDNA adsorption onto poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), polyethylene (PE), and silica (Si) surfaces, where the latter material was used as a proxy for comparison to natural particles.

Polylactic acid (PLA) materials face inherent limitations in many applications due to their low toughness. To address this challenge, this study employed a reactive melt-grafting method to prepare maleic anhydride (MA)-grafted poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT-MA), providing an effective approach to improve the interfacial compatibility between PLA and PBAT, thereby significantly enhancing the toughness and impact resistance of PLA and expanding its application scope. The grafting reaction process of PBAT-MA was investigated, as well as its toughening mechanism and effect on PLA.

Microplastics and nanoplastics (MNPs) are presenting a significant challenge to global ecosystems and human health, however, human evidence on NPs-specific effects and their impacts on gut microbiota remains absent. This study investigated the exposure characteristics of MPs/NPs and their associations with gut microbiota dysbiosis in a high-risk population-university students. Fecal samples from 24 university students were analyzed via Raman spectroscopy and micro-FTIR for comprehensive MPs/NPs characterization.

Terephthalic acid modified cl- repellent NiFeOOH for electrolysis of seawater under high-temperature.

J Colloid Interface Sci

August 2025

State Key Laboratory of Heavy Oil Processing, College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, China University of Petroleum (East China), Qingdao 266580, PR China. Electronic address:

Electrocatalytic seawater splitting at elevated temperatures for hydrogen production demonstrates significant industrial potential due to enhanced thermodynamic driving forces, accelerated kinetics, and improved mass transfer. However, the practical implementation of high-temperature alkaline seawater electrolysis is severely hindered by chloride-induced corrosion at the anode. Herein, we report a ligand engineering strategy to synthesize Cl-repellent NiFeOOH electrocatalysts through in situ structural transformation using terephthalic acid (TPA) as a coordination modifier.

Preclinical models vary in complexity and cost. Traditional 2D cell cultures that are high throughput and cost effective, but lack the complexity of multicellular interactions. Animal models and more complex, but are costly, raise ethical concerns and are not a human model to better understand human disease or response to novel treatments.
