Article Abstract

It is well understood that cancer therapies including chemotherapy, tyrosine kinase inhibitors, immune checkpoint inhibitors, and radiation can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease in patients with cancer. This can manifest as a multitude of pathologies including left ventricular dysfunction, myocarditis, cardiomyopathy, accelerated atherosclerosis, and coronary vasospasm. Multimodal cardiac imaging plays a critical role in diagnosing such pathologies by relying on noninvasive tools including echocardiograms, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography, single-photon emission computed tomography, and coronary computed tomography angiography. These methods have unique considerations and in recent years have made significant progress in their diagnostic capabilities in this patient population. As the field of cardio-oncology continues to expand rapidly, guidance on the management of such toxicities and the development of imaging technologies is crucial. In this review, we present 2 complex cases of atherosclerosis and myocarditis in patients with cancer, highlighting our rationale for management and discussing the nuances of various cardiac imaging modalities.

Wound healing is a complex, tightly regulated process involving a range of enzymes, growth factors, and cytokines that coordinate cellular activities essential for tissue repair and wound closure. However, in cases of extensive or severe injury, the intrinsic repair mechanisms are often insufficient, underscoring the need for advanced therapeutic strategies to accelerate healing and minimize scar formation. Electrically conductive hydrogels (ECHs), combining the advantageous properties of hydrogels with the physiological and electrochemical characteristics of conductive materials, present a safer and more convenient alternative to traditional electrode-based electrical stimulation (ES) for treating chronic and nonhealing wounds.

Radical esophagectomy remains the cornerstone of curative treatment for esophageal cancer, but is frequently complicated by postoperative events, most notably anastomotic leakage. Anastomotic leakage, occurring in up to 30% of cases, is multifactorial in origin and significantly increases morbidity and mortality. Patients with primary plasma cell leukemia (pPCL), particularly those with extramedullary disease (EMD), face a poor prognosis even with chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cell therapy. This case report describes a patient with relapsed/refractory pPCL and life-threatening malignant pleural effusion (PE) treated with intrapleural CAR-T cells targeting B-cell maturation antigens. CAR-T cell expansion within the PE was observed, along with a rapid reduction in leukemia cell count and PE volume.
