Article Abstract

Topological phases are robust against weak perturbations, but break down when disorder becomes sufficiently strong. However, moderate disorder can also induce topologically nontrivial phases. Thouless pumping, as a (1+1)D counterpart of the integer quantum Hall effect, is one of the simplest manifestations of topology. Here, we report experimental observations of the competition and interplay between Thouless pumping and disorder on a 41-qubit superconducting quantum processor. We improve a Floquet engineering technique to realize cycles of adiabatic pumping by simultaneously varying the on-site potentials and the hopping couplings. We demonstrate Thouless pumping in the presence of disorder and show its breakdown as the strength of disorder increases. Moreover, we observe two types of topological pumping that are induced by on-site potential disorder and hopping disorder, respectively. In particular, an intrinsic topological pump that is induced by quasi-periodic hopping disorder has never been experimentally realized before. Our highly controllable system provides a valuable quantum simulating platform for studying various aspects of topological physics in the presence of disorder.

Nonadiabatic Thouless pumping of electrons is studied within the framework of topological Floquet engineering, particularly focused on how atomic lattice dynamics affect the emergent Floquet topological phase in -polyacetylene under the driving electric field. Following the approach in a previous study [R. Zhou , , 2021, , 4496], real-time time-dependent density functional theory and Ehrenfest dynamics simulations were used to investigate the extent to which the number of pumped charges remains equal to the topological invariant, the winding number, when the temperature effect of ions and the dynamical coupling of electrons and ions are taken into account.

Thouless pumping is an emblematic manifestation of topology in physics, referring to the ability to induce a quantized transport of charge across a system by simply varying one of its parameters periodically in time. The original concept of Thouless pumping involves a noninteracting system, and has been implemented in several platforms. One current challenge in the field is to extend this concept to interacting systems.

Topological transport is determined by global properties of physical media where it occurs and is characterized by quantized amounts of adiabatically transported quantities. Discovered for periodic potential, it was also explored in disordered and discrete quasiperiodic systems. Here, we report on experimental observation of pumping of a light beam in a genuinely continuous incommensurate photorefractive quasicrystal emulated by its periodic approximants.

Two-dimensional non-Abelian Thouless pump.

Non-Abelian Thouless pumps are periodically driven systems designed by the non-Abelian holonomy principle, in which quantized transport of degenerate eigenstates emerges, exhibiting noncommutative features such that the outcome depends on the pumping sequence. The study of non-Abelian Thouless pump is currently restricted to 1D systems, while extending it to higher-dimensional systems will not only provide effective means to probe non-Abelian physics in high-dimensional topological systems, but also expand the dimension and type of associated non-Abelian geometric phase matrix for potential applications. Here, we propose the design and experimental realization of 2D non-Abelian Thouless pumps on a photonic chip with 2D photonic waveguide arrays, where degenerate photonic modes are topologically pumped simultaneously along two real-space directions.
