Article Abstract

Harnessing chiral optical forces facilitates numerous applications in enantioselective sorting and sensing. To date, significant challenges persist in substantiating the holistic complex theorem of these forces as experimental demonstrations employ common light waves (e.g., Gaussian beams and evanescent waves), showcasing the reversal of optical force against handedness (light's or particle's). Here, we elucidate the cooperative significance of incorporating multiple optical forces to generate an intricate chiral optical force in a complex spin-curl field. The interplay of distinct light properties (the transverse spin, Belinfante spin momentum, and energy vortex) is found to induce abnormal phenomena. For instance, this intriguing total force not only reverses its sign with particle handedness but also correlates strongly with particle size and light helicity. Experimental measurements of quasi-achiral and chirality-determined forces manifest our research as a paradigm for testing the holistic optical-force theorem on chiral particles, which is unattainable by previous reports that only affirm a specific type of chiral optical forces. Our study offers wide applications in chiral sensing, sorting, spintronics, metamaterials, etc.

May Two Enantiomers Have Different Raman Spectra?

Chirality

A recent publication by Kopec et al., "The effect of enantiomers of thalidomide on colon cells-Raman spectroscopy studies", reported to "demonstrate that Raman spectroscopy reveals distinct spectral differences between the enantiomers of thalidomide" and provided both experimental and computational evidence. However, the theory of Raman spectroscopy inherently establishes that two enantiomers must exhibit identical Raman frequencies and intensities.

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) has emerged as a critical technology for anticounterfeiting and optical display applications due to its unique chiroptical properties. We report a multicolor CPL-emitting elastomeric film (P37/PSK@SiO-PDMS) that synergistically combines chiral helical polyacetylene (P37) and a surface-engineered perovskite (PSK@SiO) through hydrogen-bond-directed assembly. Confinement within the PDMS matrix drives P37 to self-assemble into a chiral supramolecular structure through hydrogen bonding, inducing a chiroptical inversion.

Optically active α-aminophosphonic acids are unique analogues of α-amino acids, and numerous synthetic methods have been developed. Herein, we present a highly diastereoselective α-azidation approach to the CAMDOL-derived phosphonates, enabling ready access to 27 diverse α-azidophosphonates with defined chirality in up to 85% yield and more than 99:1 dr. Late-stage transformations through the Staudinger reaction or click reaction efficiently delivered the related pharmacological α-aminophosphonic acids or the unique α-triazolylphosphonate derivative, respectively.

Helically ordered chiral super spaces enable optical chirality in hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite crystals.

We present a supramolecular templating strategy for inducing chirality in hybrid perovskites via confined crystallization within chiral super spaces-nanoconfined, helically ordered cavities formed by the self-assembly of achiral bent-core molecules with chiral additives. Upon removal of the additives, the resulting porous films retain permanent chirality. Quasi-2D hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites crystallized within these templates exhibit distinct chiroptical activity, including mirror-image circular dichroism and circularly polarized light emitting (CPLE), with CPLE dissymmetry factors reaching up to 1.

Nematic Liquid Crystals (LCs), noted for their simple molecular alignment and broad use in optoelectronics, remain unmodified for over a century. However, in 2017, a unique polar phase, the ferroelectric nematic (N), is confirmed. Subsequently, in 2024, the revolutionary spontaneous mirror symmetry breaking of ferroelectric twist-bend nematic chiral structures (N phase) is demonstrated.
