Objective: Determine whether acute kidney injury (AKI) is associated with subsequent late-onset infection (LOI) among extremely low gestational age newborns (ELGAN).

Study Design: Secondary analysis of participants in the Preterm Erythropoietin for Neuroprotection Trial. Infants surviving ≥7 days with sufficient serum creatinine data were included.

This paper presents a causal inference estimation method for longitudinal observational studies with multiple outcomes. The method uses marginal structural models with inverse probability treatment weights (MSM-IPTWs). In developing the proposed method, we re-define the weights as a product of inverse weights at each time point, accounting for time-varying confounders and treatment exposures and possible correlation between and within (serial) the multiple outcomes.

Intravenous methocarbamol for acute pain after spine surgery: a target trial emulation.

Center for Outcomes Research and Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care and Pain Medicine, McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, Houston, Texas, USA.

Background: Skeletal muscle relaxants are often included in multimodal analgesic regimens following spine surgery, but their actual effectiveness remains unclear due to limited and inconsistent evidence. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of intravenous methocarbamol in reducing acute postoperative pain and opioid consumption after elective spine surgery.

Methods: This emulated target trial used electronic health record data from patients undergoing elective spine surgery (posterior spinal fusion, anterior cervical discectomy and fusion, laminectomy/laminotomy) between January 1, 2020 and December 31, 2023.

A history-dependent approach for accurate initial condition estimation in epidemic models.

Department of Mathematical Sciences, KAIST, Daejeon, Republic of Korea.

Mathematical modeling is a powerful tool for understanding and predicting complex dynamical systems, ranging from gene regulatory networks to population-level dynamics. However, model predictions are highly sensitive to initial conditions, which are often unknown. In infectious disease models, for instance, the initial number of exposed individuals (E) at the time the model simulation starts is frequently unknown.

Perinatal mental disorders are common, yet few robust risk factors are known. Stressful life events such as loss of a close family member due to death could serve as potential clinical predictors for which mothers develop perinatal mental disorders. This study investigated the association between bereavement and the risk of first-onset perinatal mental disorders.
