Article Abstract

: Adipophilin (ADP) is a protein associated with lipid droplets, and its expression is related to poor prognosis in certain cancers. However, its impact on the survival of patients with colorectal liver metastases (CRLMs) remains unclear. This study investigated the impact of ADP expression on long-term survival following hepatectomy in patients with CRLM. : We retrospectively analyzed 102 consecutive patients who underwent hepatectomy between 2006 and 2022. ADP expression was examined in resected specimens through immunohistochemical staining using tissue microarrays. Long-term outcomes for ADP-positive (n = 51) and ADP-negative (n = 51) groups were compared with Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. : We found significantly decreased 5-year recurrence-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) rates for ADP-positive patients relative to ADP-negative patients (29.4% versus 52.1%, respectively; = 0.001 and 43.7% versus 72.2%, respectively; = 0.003). Moreover, multivariate Cox hazards analysis demonstrated that patients with ADP-positive CRLM had a worse prognosis after hepatectomy than those with ADP-negative CRLM, as reflected by both RFS (HR 2.46, 95% CI 1.39-4.36, = 0.002) and OS (HR: 2.89, 95% CI 1.43-5.85, = 0.003). : ADP expression had a significant prognostic impact on the survival of patients with CRLM following liver resection and may aid in optimal treatment planning.

Horizontally transferred NADAR genes contribute to immune defense of ladybird beetles against bacterial infection.

State Key Laboratory of Biocontrol, School of Ecology, Sun Yat-sen University, Shenzhen, China. Electronic address:

Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) is now widely recognized as an important mechanism contributing to host immunity and adaptation. Ladybird beetles, with their diverse diets and habitats, encounter a broad spectrum of microbial threats, making effective immune responses critical for their survival. However, the immune roles of HGT-acquired genes in ladybirds remain largely unexplored.

Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerases (PARPs) are enzymes catalyzing the post-translational addition of chains of ADP-ribose moieties to proteins. In most eukaryotic cells, their primary protein targets are involved in DNA recombination, repair, and chromosome maintenance. Even though this group of enzymes is quite common in both eukaryotes and prokaryotes, no PARP homologs have been described so far in ascomycetous yeasts, leaving their potential roles in this group of organisms unexplored.

Background: Heat illness is a dangerous condition marked by a widespread inflammatory response. Although Pogostemon cablin (Blanco) Benth and its derivatives are clinically used, their mechanisms remain unclear.

Methods: 11 heat illness patients and 14 healthy volunteers from Southwest Medical University Affiliated Hospital were enrolled.

The mycotoxin, aflatoxin B (AFB), is a potent mutagen that contaminates agricultural food supplies. After ingestion, AFB is oxidized into a reactive electrophile that alkylates DNA, forming bulky lesions such as the genotoxic formamidopyrimidine lesion, AFB-Fapy dG. This lesion is mainly repaired by nucleotide excision repair (NER) in bacteria; however, in humans the picture is less clear.

Background: The most common endocrine cancer, thyroid carcinoma (TC), has a dismal prognosis when it reaches an advanced stage. Integrin α-2 () has been implicated in cancer progression, influencing both DNA damage and repair mechanisms. However, it is unknown how ITGA2 influences these processes in TC.
