Article Abstract

The design of heterojunctions offers a crucial solution for energy conversion and storage challenges, but current research predominantly focuses on charge transfer benefits, often neglecting spin attribute regulation despite the increasing recognition of spin-sensitivity in many chemical reactions. In this study, a novel magnetic heterostructure, CoFeO@CoFeMoO, is designed to simultaneously modulate charge and spin characteristics, and systematically elucidated their synergistic impact on the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Experimental results and density functional theory calculations confirmed that the magnetic heterostructure exhibits both charge transfer and spin polarization. It is found that the charge-transfer behavior enhances conductivity and adsorption ability through band structure regulation. Meanwhile, magnetically polarized electrons promote triplet O generation and accelerate electron transport via spin-selective pathways. Moreover, the heterostructure's effective response to external alternating magnetic fields further amplifies the spin-dependent effect and introduces a magnetothermal effect, locally heating the active sites through spin flip, thereby boosting catalytic activity. Consequently, the OER activity of the magnetic heterostructure is improved by 83.8 times at 1.5 V compared to its individual components. This magnetic heterojunction strategy presents a promising avenue for advanced catalysis through synergistic regulating of charge-transfer and spin-ordering.

Femtosecond laser excitation of nanometer thin heterostructures comprising a heavy metal and a magnetically ordered material is known to result in the emission of terahertz radiation. However, the nature of the emitted radiation from heavy metal/antiferromagnet heterostructures has sparked debates and controversies in the literature. Here, we unambiguously separate spin and charge contributions from Pt/NiO heterostructures by introducing an unprecedented methodology combining high external magnetic fields with a symmetry analysis of the emitted terahertz polarization.

Hybrid Superconducting-Magnetic Van der Waals Heterostructures: Physics and Application.

Adv Mater

State Key Laboratory of Surface Physics and Department of Physics, Fudan University, Shanghai, 200433, China.

Superconductivity and magnetism are two of the most extensively studied ordered systems in condensed matter physics. Recent advancements in the fabrication of van der Waals (vdW) layered materials have significantly advanced the exploration of both fundamental physics and practical applications within their heterostructures. The focus not only lies on the coexisting mechanism between superconductivity and magnetism, but also highlights the potential of these atomically thin layers to serve as crucial components in future superconducting circuits.

In this work, we investigate how the crystallographic growth direction influences spin current transmission in antiferromagnetic (AF) NiO thin films. By manipulating epitaxial growth, we explored the spin transport characteristics in LaSrMnO/NiO/Pt heterostructures grown on top of (001)- and (111)-oriented SrTiO substrates, varying the NiO barrier thickness (t). Spin currents were generated via spin pumping (SP), and detection was done by the inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE).

The dispersion of topological surface bands in MnBiTe-based magnetic topological insulator heterostructures is strongly affected by band hybridization and is spatially inhomogeneous due to varying surface layer terminations on microscopic length scales. Here, we apply micro-focused angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with tunable photon energy from 18 to 30 eV to distinguish bulk valence and conduction bands from surface bands on the three surface terminations of MnBiTe. We observe a strong enhancement of photoemission intensity from the topological surface bands at the Bi Oabsorption edge, which is exploited to visualize a gapless Dirac cone on the MnBiTe-terminated surface and varying degrees of hybridization effects in the surface bands on the two distinct BiTe-terminated surfaces.

The topological quantum phases in antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBiTe hold promise for next-generation spintronics, but their experimental realization has been constrained by challenges in preparing high-quality devices. In this work, we report a new wax-assisted exfoliation and transfer method that enables the fabrication of MnBiTe heterostructures with both surfaces encapsulated by AlO. This strategy strongly enhances the transport performances of the topological quantum phases in MnBiTe flakes, which is attributed to the enhancement of magnetism by the AlO layer.
