Article Abstract

All-solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries (ASSLSBs) have garnered widespread attention due to their advantages of high energy density and enhanced safety. However, the typical composite structure composed of solid-state electrolyte (SE), discrete conducting carbon black, and microsized sulfur (μ-S) with long-range Li/e conducting path and huge volume changes, suffers from sluggish charge transport and severe electrochemical-mechanical failure. In this work, a unique hierarchical carbon nanocage (hCNC) is applied as a continuous conducting network where nanosized sulfur are confined. Due to the synergistic effects of multi-dimensional (particle, interface, and electrode) structural engineering, this new sulfur-carbon composite cathode (S@hCNC39) can achieve uniform distribution of sulfur and carbon, and efficiently constructs triple-phase interfaces, showing enhanced charge-carrier transport and improved electrochemical-mechanical stability. Remarkable cycling performance of 89% after 300 cycles at 0.2 C at 30 °C is realized in ASSLSBs assembled with S@hCNC39. Notably, ASSLSBs achieve an ultrahigh areal capacity of 9.95 mAh cm with stable cycling at 60 °C with high sulfur contents of 40% and high sulfur loadings of 6 mg cm. These results provide critical insights into the design of rational sulfur-carbon composites and offer a viable approach to enhance the overall performance of ASSLSBs.

Zinc-air batteries (ZABs) operating in gas-solid-liquid three-phase systems suffer from sluggish reaction kinetics and low power output, which severely hinder their commercialization. To address these challenges, an integrated strategy is proposed combining core-shell heterophase catalytic species with superhydrophobic properties. The H─CoFe─CNT catalyst, featuring carbon nanotube-grown hollow cubic carbon cages, incorporates metal carbide@metal core-shell heterophase catalytic species and exhibits superhydrophobicity.

Electrochemical Role of Li-Ligands at the Triple-Phase Boundary in Li-O Batteries.

The increasing global energy demand drives interest in high-energy-density alternatives to lithium-ion batteries, with Li-O batteries emerging as promising candidates due to their exceptionally high theoretical energy density. However, the gap between the theoretical and practical energy densities remains significant, primarily due to the limited formation of LiO, attributed to restricted mass transfer at the reaction interface. To mitigate this limitation, a metal-organic framework (MOF) is functionalized with an aligned lithium ligand by a facile acid-base reaction method, aiming to improve reaction kinetics.

HO electrosynthesis via oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is a green and sustainable strategy for on-site electro-Fenton processes, yet it suffers from high aeration energy consumption and poor O utilization efficiency. Here, N, P self-doped porous carbon (NP/PC) was synthesized from agricultural waste without exogenous dopants or templates to fabricate self-floating gas diffusion electrode (GDE) for HO electrosynthesis. A higher pyrolysis temperature promoted porous structures formation in NP/PC, whereas the N/P functional groups content decreased as pyrolysis temperature increased from 450 °C to 600 °C.

In proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), ionomer aggregation on Pt/C catalysts leads to increased oxygen transport resistance of conventional catalyst layers. This behavior significantly influences oxygen transport in the microenvironment at the triple-phase interface of Pt/C catalysts. To address this challenge, triazine-based covalent organic frameworks (COFs) were incorporated into the cathode catalyst layer, so that their well-defined pore structure and proton eligible triazine sites interact with terminal sulfonate groups of the Nafion ionomer.

Nanostructuring of solid oxide cell (SOC) electrodes is necessary for enhancing the electrochemically active triple phase boundary length and thus lowering the operating temperature of these devices. However, nanoscale morphology in nickel-yttria-stabilized zirconia (Ni-YSZ) electrodes renders the structure extremely prone to Ni agglomeration and hence performance degradation upon long-term operation. To overcome this challenge, application of multiple CeO nanolayers into the nanoscale Ni-YSZ electrodes, all produced from direct deposition of liquid precursors, is proposed.
