Article Abstract

The debate about whether the capacity of working memory (WM) varies with the complexity of memory items continues. This study employed novel experimental materials to investigate the role of complexity in WM capacity. Across seven experiments, we explored the relationship between complexity and WM capacity. The results indicated that the complexity of memory items significantly affects WM capacity. However, given the non-linear relationship between complexity and WM capacity, we propose that WM may not allocate resources directly to each individual item. Instead, it might integrate these items to some extent before storage.

Background: Ward-round quality impacts patient outcomes, and poor conduct results in increased rates of preventable adverse events. Despite being a core component of patient outcomes, there is minimal literature informing best practice. The aviation industry has mitigated human error using a "Sterile Cockpit" to reduce interruptions and non-essential activities.

Self-reported risk taking predicts handrail use on a stepladder in older adults.

J Safety Res

Department of Bioengineering, University of Pittsburgh, 301 Schenley Place, 4420 Bayard Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15213, USA.

Objective: Identify individual factors that predict handrail use and quantify the impact of handrail use on balance while using a stepladder.

Background: Ladders are among the riskiest consumer products especially for older adults. Individual factors such as physiological capacity or risk-taking propensity have been found to influence safety behaviors and fall risk.

As the primary storage protein, highland barley gliadin (HBG) exhibits limitations in the processing of highland barley foods, primarily due to its abundant non-polar amino acids. In this study, HBG was utilized to prepare sugar-HBG complexes with pentose (xylose), hexoses (glucose and galactose), and disaccharides (lactose and maltose) in an aqueous system at a pH of 11 and a temperature of 75 °C. Subsequently, the structural and functional characteristics of these complexes were evaluated.

Compositional "plainification" in biodegradable magnesium-rare earth alloys - Achieving well-balanced performance in an ultra-lean Mg-Pr alloy.

Medical Research Institute, Department of Orthopedics, Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital (Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences), Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, 510080, China. Electronic address:

Contrary to the traditional strengthening route by adding multiple & high-dosage alloying elements, we here explored extremely compositional and phase-constituent "simplification" in rare earth (RE) containing biodegradable magnesium alloys for better biocompatibility. An ultra-lean Mg-0.1Pr alloy with a multiscale microstructure has been developed through casting and extrusion, which showed well-balanced performances that match the commercial Mg-based orthopedic products.

In the field of theranostics, triaminophenaziniums are promising molecules due to their intrinsic properties such as an absorbance beyond 500 nm associated with large molar extinction coefficients, high fluorescence quantum yields, as well as phototoxicity. This study explored how three triaminophenazinium salts relate in structure and activity, highlighting their potential as theranostic agents. The nature of the moiety in position 2 of the dyes was varied from H, to -CH or -Bu.
