Objective: Many surgical adverse events are due to failures in nontechnical skills. Improving nontechnical skills has become a priority for surgical training organizations, yet there is little evidence to guide improvement activities. aim of this review was to investigate the effectiveness of interventions to improve surgeon nontechnical skills overall and by individual domains.

Background: The surgical ward round is the linchpin of inpatient care. Despite this, it is often pressured by external forces such as theatre times, on-call demands, or outpatient clinics. Checklists have been successful in saving lives, particularly in the operating room.

However, evidence to guide NTS improvement activities is lacking. This study aimed to investigate the incidence and characteristics of non-technical errors linked to fatalities in a large, representative surgical-patient population to guide future NTS improvement.

Ward round quality is strongly linked to patient outcomes, yet ward round best practice is severely underrepresented in the literature. Accurate and thorough ward round documentation is essential to improving communication and patient outcomes.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Poor quality ward rounds contribute to a large proportion of patient complications, delayed discharge, and increased hospital cost. This systematic review investigated all interventions aiming to improve patient and process-based outcomes in ward rounds.
Methods: This systematic review was prospectively registered in PROSPERO, the international prospective register of systematic reviews (CRD42023394325).

Objectives: The Health Technology Assessment International (HTAi) 2023 Annual Meeting included a novel "fishbowl" session intended to 1) probe the role of HTA in the emergence of generative pretrained transformer (GPT) large language models (LLMs) into health care and 2) demonstrate the semistructured, interactive fishbowl process applied to an emerging "hot topic" by diverse international participants.
Methods: The fishbowl process is a format for conducting medium-to-large group discussions. Participants are separated into an inner group and an outer group on the periphery.
Background: Patient-surgeon communication is an important component of the success of a consultation and is known to impact patient outcomes. The aim of this study was to investigate whether a document called a question prompt list, containing suggested questions that a patient may like to ask their doctor, improved communication.
Methods: A prospective RCT was conducted from October 2021 to October 2022 at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Adelaide, Australia.
Introduction: Non-technical skills complement technical skills in surgeons to provide best possible care for patients. The former is essential to promote patient engagement. Coaching has been introduced to surgeons as a method to improve non-technical skills.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Quality communication has been found to improve patient outcomes. Despite good communication, information may still be forgotten or misunderstood by patients. A question prompt list is a document to help patients ask questions.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Accurate and thorough surgical ward round documentation is crucial for maintaining quality clinical care. Accordingly, checklists have been proposed to improve ward round documentation. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the literature investigating the use of checklists to improve surgical ward round documentation.

By asking questions, patients can better understand their disease and make informed decisions regarding their health journey. We aimed to investigate factors that affect question asking behaviours in surgical outpatient consultations and to determine the typical question-asking by doctors, patients, and their companions.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Surgical outpatient consultations are demanding for the surgeon and patients without a definite formula for success. Various factors have been identified regarding factors that influence patient satisfaction and engagement. We aimed to examine the modern-day surgical outpatient consultation and report on these factors.
