The biological treatment of coking wastewater is a challenge. The application of prepositioned aerobic process has rarely been systematically reported, among which the detoxification and nitrification performance of the prepositioned aerobic unit (O1) is worthy of investigation. Results indicate that O1 achieves stable simultaneous detoxification and nitrification by regulating the dissolved oxygen, effectively maintaining ammonification, nitrosation, and complete nitrification phases. Microbial community structure, metabolic pathways and functional genes showed different preferences at different phases. High dissolved oxygen concentrations (2.20-3.00 mg/L) benefited the enrichment of carbon and nitrogen related major metabolic pathways and functional genes. BOD/COD ratio, dissolved oxygen and toxic pollutants together shaped microbial community structure and nitrogen transformation processes. Based on the principle of DO regulation, it could assemble a biotransformation compartment for nitrogen removal from complex wastewaters through a pollutant detoxification mechanism of rapid microbial proliferation,and provides a promising approach for toxic industrial wastewater.

Dissolved organic matter is the main precursor for the formation of halogenated disinfection by-products (X-DBPs) during the disinfection of drinking water. However, the majority of the X-DBPs identified based on the artificially prepared water using the Suwannee River Natural Organic Matter (SRNOM) will bias the assessment of X-DBP formation potential in actual natural water. Herein, the non-targeted analysis based on ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry was employed to reveal the discrepancy in the molecular composition of X-DBPs and their precursors in SRNOM solution and actual authentic samples during disinfection.

Freezing enhancing the photochemistry of dissolved organic matter (DOM), yet the mechanism of reactive intermediate (RIs) generation influenced by DOM property and structure remain elusive. Here, we demonstrate that freezing induces exceptional amplification of RIs, with steady-state concentrations in ice (-10 °C) surpassing aqueous solutions by 5-41 times. Laser scanning confocal microscopy first visualized cryo-concentration of DOM and RIs in liquid-like regions (LLR).

Hypoxia and elevated seawater temperatures are increasingly prevalent stressors in marine ecosystems, significantly impacting the physiology of marine organisms. This study investigates the transcriptomic and proteomic responses of Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) hemocytes to hypoxia alone (water temperature, 23 °C; dissolved oxygen [DO] level, 1 mg O₂/L) and combined hypoxia with high temperature (water temperature, 28 °C; DO level, 1 mg O₂/L) over a 10-day exposure period. Using RNA sequencing and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, we identified distinct molecular responses to these stressors.

Aquatic environmental pollution could be a direct trigger of infection through cercarial invasion to skin / gills or indirectly as a predisposing factor that damage the physical barriers of targeted fish resulting in high intensities of EMC infections in all fish vital organs. In the current study, a total of 150 African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) were randomly collected from Mariotteya drain all the way through the Egyptian township of Shabramant located at the historical heart of Giza. Catfish samples were collected in mid-summer during the period from June to July 2024.
