Article Abstract

Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the allele frequencies of the human platelet antigens (HPA) -1-29w system in Jiangsu (China) and establish the platelet apheresis registry in blood donors.

Methods: HPA genotyping was performed using the MassARRAY iPLEX platform. Allele and genotype frequencies were estimated by direct counting and tested for Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The transfusion mismatch probability was calculated for every HPA specificity.

Results: The HPA allele frequencies in the Jiangsu Han population of HPA-1b, -2b, -3b, -4b, -5b, -6b, -11b, -15b, and -21b were 0.0055, 0.0530, 0.4116, 0.0015, 0.0155, 0.0162, 0.0003, 0.4683, and 0.0070, respectively, in which a heterozygote of HPA-11a/b was first detected in China. Only allele a was detected for HPA-7-10w,-12-14w,-16-20w, and -22-29w quasi-systems. The highest mismatch rate of HPA genes in 1,640 platelet donors was the HPA-15 system, followed by the HPA-3 system with a rate of 37.4% and 36.71%, respectively.

Conclusion: China's largest-scale platelet registry of HPA-1-29w has been explored. The MassARRAY platform may help found the platelet apheresis registry which would be useful to provide matching platelets and lead to a more accurate, effective, and safe transfusion for patients with platelet therapy.

This study analyzed the correlation between false-positive HIV ELISA results (using Bio-Rad reagents) and SARS-COV-2 antibody levels in 301 unpaid apheresis platelet donors with prior infection or vaccination, enrolled from Zhejiang Blood Center between February 1 and May 31, 2023. Trends in both the HIV ELISA false-positive rate and SARS-COV-2 antibody levels were assessed. The false-positive rate rose in early 2023, peaking at 0.

Preparation of cold-stored platelets on-demand: A novel approach to inventory management.

Transfusion

September 2025

Research and Development, Australian Red Cross Lifeblood, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

Background: Cold-stored platelets (CSP) are now being used to treat acute bleeding. However, as CSP are less suitable for prophylaxis, both room temperature (RT) platelets and CSP will be required, which complicates inventory management. The production of CSP "on-demand" from RT platelets may be a desirable option.

In a resource-constrained setting, maximizing plateletpheresis efficiency is critical. We believe leveraging advanced apheresis device software to enhance platelet yield, reduce consumables, and shorten procedure times offers significant advantages. This study compared Haemonetics, Trima, and Optia apheresis devices, analyzing donor and machine parameters.

The challenge of secondary cardiovascular prevention in very high Lipoprotein (a) level: a case report.

Background: While advances in technology and procedural techniques have significantly improved outcomes post-PCI, two pharmacological strategies have gained particular attention for their effectiveness in reducing long-term cardiovascular (CV) risk: anti-platelet therapies and lipid-lowering therapies (LLT). The 10-year recurrence risk for major CV events remains as high as 10-30%, due to various pathophysiological pathways collectively known as residual risk (RR), even with optimal CV risk factor management after acute coronary syndrome (ACS). RR includes factors such as elevated lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)], triglycerides, pro-thrombotic states, hyperglycemia, and persistent subclinical arterial inflammation.

Background And Objectives: Cold-stored platelets (CSPs) stored out to 14 days are approved in the United States for use in actively bleeding patients when conventional room temperature-stored platelets are unavailable. Cold storage promotes aggregate formation, yet how specific storage conditions impact aggregate formation remains poorly defined. As CSPs are stored in gas-permeable bags, we investigated how the shelving style (perforated, solid) or label orientation (up, down) affects CSP aggregate formation.
