The reconstructed moiré superlattices of the transition metal chalcogenide (TMD), formed by the combined effects of interlayer coupling and intralayer strain, provide a platform for exploring quantum physics. Here, using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, we observe that the strained WSe/WS moiré superlattices undergo various out-of-plane atomically buckled configurations, a phenomenon termed out-of-plane reconstruction. This evolution is attributed to the differentiated response of intralayer strain in high-symmetry stacking regions to external strain. Notably, in larger out-of-plane reconstructions, there is a significant alteration in the local density of states (LDOS) near the Γ point in the valence band, exceeding 300%, with the moiré potential in the valence band surpassing 200 meV. Further, we confirm that the variation in interlayer coupling within high-symmetry stacking regions is the main factor affecting the moiré electronic states rather than the intralayer strain. Our study unveils intrinsic regulating mechanisms of out-of-plane reconstructed moiré superlattices and contributes to the study of reconstructed moiré physics.

We review the fabrication and transport characterization of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN)/Bernal bilayer graphene (BLG) moiré superlattices. Due to the moiré effect, the hBN/BLG moiré superlattices exhibit an energy gap at the charge neutrality point (CNP) even in the absence of a perpendicular electric field. In BLG, the application of a perpendicular electric field tunes the energy gap at the CNP, which contrasts with single-layer graphene and is similar to the family of rhombohedral multilayer graphene.

We present a coordination-inspired strategy for assembling binary nanocrystal superlattices (BNSLs) using CdSe nanotetrapods as symmetry-encoding building blocks. Exploiting their intrinsic tetrahedral geometry, which mimics the sp hybridization of carbon atoms in a diamond lattice, we encode spatially defined binding sites that guide regioselective coassembly with spherical nanocrystals. By tuning the size ratio between components, we achieve both three-dimensional and two-dimensional BNSLs with long-range structural order.

High-operating-temperature (HOT) mid-wavelength and long-wavelength infrared photodetectors have emerged as critical enablers for eliminating bulky cryogenic cooling systems, offering transfromative potential in developing compact, energy-efficient infrared technologies with reduced size, weight, power, and cost. Focusing on infrared photodiodes, this review first discusses the fundamental mechanisms limiting performance at elevated operating temperatures. Subsequently, the progress in conventional epitaxial semiconductors, such as HgCdTe, InAsSb, and III-V type-II superlattice is reviewed, highlighting the evolution of device architectures designed to effectively suppress dark currents and approach background-limited performance.

Crystal phase control of III-V semiconductor nanowires grown by the vapor liquid solid mechanism has emerged as a new frontier in nanomaterials in the 2010s. Of particular interest is the ability to grow the metastable wurtzite crystal, which is commercially unavailable in semiconductors such as GaAs and SiGe. The successful growth of wurtzite GaAs nanowires has been demonstrated by precise control of the wetting contact angle of the catalyst particle.

As a versatile platform for exploring exotic quantum phases, moiré superlattices, ranging from twisted graphene to twisted transition metal dichalcogenides, have been intensively studied. In this work, based on exact diagonalization and Hartree-Fock mean-field calculations, the interaction-driven topological phases are investigated in hole-doped twisted bilayer MoS at the high filling factor = 3. Besides the nematic insulator and quantum anomalous Hall phases, the topological Wigner molecule crystal (TWMC) phase is found in the phase diagram.
