Article Abstract

Background: Hairy cell leukemia (HCL) is a rare indolent B-cell lymphoid malignancy. The majority of patients are asymptomatic and HCL is usually diagnosed incidentally during a routine blood cell count. In symptomatic patients, typical symptoms are related to pancytopenia and splenomegaly. In this review, we present rare clinical symptoms in patients with HCL.

Methods: A literature search was conducted of PubMed, Web of Science and Google Scholar for articles concerning hairy cell leukemia, leukemia cutis, bone lesions, neurological manifestations, pulmonary symptoms, ocular manifestations, cardiac manifestation and rare symptoms. Publications from January 1980 to August 2024 were scrutinized. Additional relevant publications were obtained by reviewing the references from the chosen articles.

Results: Extramedullary and extranodal manifestations of classic HCL are rare. However, leukemic involvement in the skin, bone, central nervous system, gastrointestinal tract, heart, kidney, liver, lung, ocular system and other organs have been reported.

The fluid dynamics and functional diversity of the flagella of free-living flagellates.

Philos Trans A Math Phys Eng Sci

Department of Biology, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Flagellates, unicellular organisms equipped with one or a few flagella, are phylogenetically and functionally hugely diverse. Yet, most studies have focused on a few model organisms and on the role of the flagellum in propulsion, ignoring the fundamental role of the flagellum in foraging. The number and position of flagella vary between species; the flagella may be naked or equipped with vanes or hairs; the kinematics and wave patterns vary and may be planar or three-dimensional; and the flagellum may extend from the surface of the cell or lie within a groove on the cell surface.

Essential tremor (ET) is a common neurological disease that is characterized by 4-12 Hz kinetic tremors of the upper limbs and high genetic heterogeneity. Although numerous candidate genes and loci have been reported, the etiology of ET remains unclear. A novel ET-related gene was initially identified in a five-generation family via whole-exome sequencing, and other variants were identified in 772 familial ET probands and 640 sporadic individuals via whole-genome sequencing.

NAMPT Is A Novel Inhibitor of Vascular Calcification in Chronic Kidney Disease.

Department of Cardiology, Laboratory of Heart Center, Heart Center, Zhujiang Hospital, Southern Medical University, China. (Q.D., X.Z., L.F., A.C., Z.L., Y.Y., J.Z., X.L., Y.L., J.Y.).

Background: Vascular calcification is very common in patients with chronic kidney disease and contributes to the increased risk of cardiovascular events. NAMPT (nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase), the rate-limiting enzyme in the salvage pathway of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, has been shown to exert an antiaging effect on vascular smooth muscle cells. However, whether NAMPT is involved in the regulation of vascular calcification remains unclear.

Hairy cell leukemia variant (HCL-v) is a rare and more aggressive subtype of B-cell leukemia. While it shares certain clinical features with classical hairy cell leukemia (HCL-c), HCL-v typically follows a more malignant course and responds poorly to conventional therapies. We report a case of HCL-v in a 57-year-old male who was admitted with splenomegaly and abnormal blood counts.
