Skylight polarization patterns, generated by sunlight scattering in the Earth's atmosphere, serve as an under-utilized source of directional information for navigation. This study addresses the challenges of maritime polarization navigation, including vessel tilt, cloud interference, and structural obstructions, by developing a gyro-stabilized division of focal plane (DOFP) polarization imaging system and a robust polarization compass orientation algorithm. The system captures high-resolution polarization images across multiple spectral bands (410-870 nm), with optimal polarization detection identified in the 450-500 nm range.

Understanding the physical processes that regulate star formation and galaxy evolution are major areas of activity in modern astrophysics. Nearby galaxies offer unique opportunities to inspect interstellar medium (ISM), star formation (SF), radiative, dynamic and magnetic ( ) physics in great detail from sub-galactic (kpc) scales to sub-cloud (sub-pc) scales, from quiescent galaxies to starbursts, and from field galaxies to overdensities. In this case study, we discuss the major breakthroughs in this area of research that will be enabled by the Atacama Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (AtLAST), a proposed 50-m single-dish submillimeter telescope.

Abundant water from primordial supernovae at cosmic dawn.

Primordial (or population III) supernovae were the first nucleosynthetic engines in the Universe, and they forged the heavy elements required for the later formation of planets and life. Water, in particular, is thought to be crucial to the cosmic origins of life as we understand it, and recent models have shown that water can form in low-metallicity gas like that present at high redshifts. Here we present numerical simulations that show that the first water in the Universe formed in population III core-collapse and pair-instability supernovae at redshifts  ≈ 20.

Low-dimensional hybrid perovskites are emerging semiconductors with excellent photophysical property, chemical stability, and structural diversity and have shown prominence in the fields of solar cells, light-emitting diodes, and X-ray detectors. To date, the inorganic framework structure in perovskites has been intensively studied, but the molecular arrangement of organic counterparts and its impact on physical properties remains largely unexplored. Herein, we engineer the coordination geometry of inorganic and organic building units to implement molecular ordering and π-π stacking in low-dimensional perovskites.
