Article Abstract

We inspect the origin of the inverted singlet-triplet gap (INVEST) and slow change in the reverse intersystem crossing (rISC) rate with temperature, as recently observed. A Wigner phase space study reveals that, though INVEST is found at equilibrium geometry, variation in the exchange interaction and the doubles-excitation for other geometries in the harmonic region leads to non-INVEST behavior. This highlights the importance of nuclear degrees of freedom for the INVEST phenomenon, and in this case, geometric puckering of the studied molecule determines INVEST and the associated rISC dynamics.

Symmetry Breaking Assisted Fast Reverse Intersystem Crossing for Efficient TADF Materials.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

September 2025

State Key Laboratory of Luminescent Materials and Devices, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Luminescence from Molecular Aggregates, South China University of Technology, Guangzhou, 510640, China.

Reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) process is critical for thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials to realize spin-flip of triplet excitons in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), but the RISC processes of most TADF materials are not fast enough, undermining electroluminescence (EL) efficiency stability and operational lifetime. Herein, a symmetry breaking strategy to accelerate RISC processes is proposed. By designing asymmetric electron-withdrawing backbone consisting of benzonitrile and xanthone/thioxanthone groups, two new asymmetric TADF molecules, 4tCzCN-pXT and 4tCzCN-pTXT, with multiple 3,6-di-tert-butylcarbazole donors are successfully developed.

Cyclization-enhanced photoactivatable reversible room-temperature phosphorescence for efficient real-time light printing.

The construction of polymer-based photoactivated room-temperature phosphorescence systems remains a prominent research focus, yet the development of ultrafast activated systems under ambient conditions continues to pose a challenge. In this study, cyclized phenothiazine derivatives bearing diverse substituents are synthesized and incorporated into an amorphous polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix, resulting in significantly enhanced dynamic photoactivation characteristics compared with those of their pristine monomeric counterparts. Under ambient conditions and 2 s irradiation, the lifetime and quantum yield of C[4]PTZ-OH@PVA increase by factors of 1.

Facile synthesis of a near-infrared fluorophore based on Dibenzo[def,mno]chrysene-6,12-dione acceptor for dual applications in organic light-emitting diode and cellular imaging.

August 2025

State Key Laboratory of Luminescent Materials and Devices, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Luminescence from Molecular Aggregates, South China University of Technology, Guangzhou 510640, PR China.. Electronic address:

Near-infrared (NIR) fluorophores, characterized by emission wavelengths exceeding 650 nm, have garnered significant attention due to their diverse and advanced applications in fields such as organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), photomicrography, anti-counterfeiting, in vivo/vitro bioimaging, as well as theranostics. In this study, we report the rational design and facile synthesis of a novel NIR fluorescent molecule, AA-TPA, strategically constructed by integrating two twisted triphenylamine (TPA) electron-donating groups with a dibenzo[def,mno]chrysene-6,12-dione (AA) electron-accepting unit. The pronounced donor-acceptor interaction within the non-planar and rigid molecular architecture facilitates NIR emission with a peak at 667 nm, while preserving efficient luminescence with a photoluminescence quantum yield of 46 % in a doped film.

Regioisomerization-Directed MR-TADF Emitters: Enhanced RISC and Suppressed Aggregation Toward High-Performance Narrowband Blue OLEDs.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

August 2025

Shenzhen Key Laboratory of New Information Display and Storage Materials, College of Materials Science and Engineering, Shenzhen University, Shenzhen, 518060, P.R. China.

The organic light-emitting diode (OLED) performance of multi-resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) emitters is fundamentally constrained by their slow reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) and pronounced aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ). Herein, through regioselective borylation, we design and synthesize a series of blue MR-TADF emitters. The regioisomerization-directed twist configuration synergistically enhances RISC while suppressing ACQ, without compromising spectral purity.

A simple-structure TADF sensitizer enables high-performance red hyperfluorescent OLEDs with an external quantum efficiency of 40.

Chem Commun (Camb)

August 2025

Shenzhen Key Laboratory of New Information Display and Storage Materials, College of Materials Science and Engineering, Shenzhen University, Shenzhen 518060, China.

A simple-structure, pure-organic TADF sensitizer, namely, CFBOPXZ, targeting red hyperfluorescence was designed and synthesized. CFBOPXZ exhibits simultaneous high PLQY, rapid radiative decay and reverse intersystem crossing rates, enabling stable and narrowband red hyperfluorescent OLEDs with an external quantum efficiency of 40% and minimal efficiency roll-off.
