Cadmium (Cd) accumulation in rice, a global environmental issue, poses a significant threat to human health due to its widespread presence and potential transfer through the food chain. Selenium (Se), an essential micronutrient for humans and plants, can reduce Cd uptake in rice and alleviate Cd-induced toxicity. However, the effects and mechanisms of Se supplementation on rice performance in Cd-contaminated soil remain largely unknown. Here, a global meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the existing knowledge on the effects and mechanisms by which Se supplementation impacts rice growth and Cd accumulation. The result showed that Se supplementation has a significant positive impact on rice growth in Cd-contaminated soil. Specifically, Se supplementation decreased Cd accumulation in rice roots by 16.3 % (11.8-20.6 %), shoots by 24.6 % (19.9-29.1 %), and grain by 37.3 % (33.4-40.9 %), respectively. The grain Cd reduction was associated with Se dose and soil Cd contamination level but not Se type or application method. Se influences Cd accumulation in rice by regulating the expression of Cd transporter genes (OSLCT1, OSHMA2, and OSHMA3), enhancing Cd sequestration in the cell walls, and reducing Cd bioavailability in the soil. Importantly, Se treatment promoted Se enrichment in rice and alleviated oxidative damage associated with Cd exposure by stimulating photosynthesis and activating antioxidant enzymes. Overall, Se treatment mitigated the health hazard associated with Cd in rice grains, particularly in lightly contaminated soil. These findings reveal that Se supplementation is a promising strategy for simultaneous Cd reduction and Se enrichment in rice.

Aims: This study aims to develop and evaluate a rapid and high-multiplex pathogen detection method for clinical and food specimens to address the ongoing public health threat of foodborne infections and the limitations of conventional culture-based diagnostics.
Methods And Results: The foodborne bacteria (FBB) assay integrates multiplex PCR, T7 exonuclease hydrolysis, and a suspension bead array to simultaneously detect 16 genes from 13 major foodborne bacteria. Analytical performance was evaluated using reference strains, while diagnostic performance was assessed using clinical and food samples.

The brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens (Stål), is a typical insecticide-induced resurgence rice pest that causes severe damage to rice in Asian countries. Previous studies have shown that the fungicide Jinggangmycin (JGM), used to control rice sheath blight disease, can stimulate BPH fecundity; however, the molecular mechanism remains to be further explored. In this study, based on transcriptomic analysis, we found that the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway was significantly enriched in BPH after feeding on JGM-treated rice, where the NlPR-L and NlABD4-L genes were significantly upregulated.

This study investigated the spatial distribution of Cd and mineral nutrients (Mg, P, K, Ca, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn) in rice grains from low-Cd accumulating (LA) and high-Cd accumulating (HA) cultivars using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). Cd concentrations were significantly higher in HA than LA cultivars across polished rice, brown rice, and husks. Spatial mapping demonstrated Cd was distributed in the outer endosperm/embryo of LA grains, but preferentially enriched in the embryo and aleurone layer of HA grains.

Methods: We conducted a prospective, single-center, observational study in an academic intensive care unit.

Zhongzi purple rice is recognized as a nutritionally superior whole-grain variety, containing higher levels of protein, iron, dietary fiber, and vitamin B6 compared to conventional rice. While the nutritional profile of Zhongzi purple rice is well-established, the spatial distribution and structural specificity of its lipid components, especially germ-specific triacylglycerols (TAGs), remain poorly characterized. This study employs a multimodal mass spectrometric strategy to investigate the lipidomic uniqueness of the Zhongzi purple rice.
