Droplet transmission is the primary infection route for respiratory diseases like COVID-19 and influenza, but small and low-cost wearable droplet detection devices are a significant challenge. Herein, a respiratory droplet micro-sensor based on graphene oxide quantum dots (GOQDs) assembled onto SiO microspheres by the nebulized natural deposition is presented. Benefiting from the energy dissipation of the microsphere to droplets, the sensor can detect droplets as far as 2 m from coughing. With this sensor, droplet signal variations caused by some factors like distance, speech, angles, and wind directions are explored, and the effectiveness of different protective measures in preventing droplet transmission is evaluated. This droplet detection technology is expected to be utilized for the development of personal detection and protection devices against infectious respiratory diseases.

Introduction: Aberrant biomechanical force-induced chondrocyte adipogenesis is involved in the development of temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ OA). Growth differentiation factor 11 (GDF11) has been implicated in this process. However, whether mechanosensitive histone deacetylase 3 (HDAC3) regulates GDF11 signaling in the context of TMJ OA remains to be elucidated.

Maternal diet-induced obesity (DIO) may affect adult offspring oocyte quality due to mitochondrial dysfunction. Here, we investigated whether offspring of DIO mothers exhibit mitochondrial abnormalities in their primordial follicle oocytes (PFOs) already at birth, and if (further) alterations can be detected at weaning. Female Swiss mice were fed a control or obesogenic diet for 7 weeks before mating, and throughout pregnancy and lactation.

Predicting indoor air quality during infectious disease conditions relies on models simulating particle materials (PM)/bioaerosols distribution. Understanding the thermo-fluid properties of exhaled air is crucial for comprehending disease transmission dynamics. This study employs a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model to simulate cough-induced particle dispersion in a closed space.

: As a well-known environmental hazard, ambient fine particulate matter (PM, aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 µm) has been positively correlated with an increased risk of digestive system diseases, including appendicitis, inflammatory bowel disease, and gastrointestinal cancer. Additionally, PM exposure has been shown to alter microbiota composition and diversity in human and animal models.
