Article Abstract

A new network-based SIR epidemic model with saturated incidence rate and nonlinear recovery rate is proposed. We adopt an edge-compartmental approach to rewrite the system as a degree-edge-mixed model. The explicit formula of the basic reproduction number $ \mathit{\boldsymbol{R_{0}}} $ is obtained by renewal equation and Laplace transformation. We find that $ \mathit{\boldsymbol{R_{0}}} < 1 $ is not enough to ensure global asymptotic stability of the disease-free equilibrium, and when $ \mathit{\boldsymbol{R_{0}}} > 1 $, the system can exist multiple endemic equilibria. When the number of hospital beds is small enough, the system will undergo backward bifurcation at $ \mathit{\boldsymbol{R_{0}}} = 1 $. Moreover, it is proved that the stability of feasible endemic equilibrium is determined by signs of tangent slopes of the epidemic curve. Finally, the theoretical results are verified by numerical simulations. This study suggests that maintaining sufficient hospital beds is crucial for the control of infectious diseases.

Infectious diseases in livestock have detrimental effects on the health of animals, the livelihood of farmers, and the meat industry. Understanding the specific pathways of disease spread and evaluating the effectiveness of surveillance measures is critical to preventing large outbreaks. Direct livestock transport, transport tours-where a single truck moves livestock between multiple farms in a single journey-and contacts that livestock have with their surrounding environment have been identified as drivers of disease dissemination.

Objectives: This study aimed to develop an interpretable, domain-generalizable deep learning model for microvascular invasion (MVI) assessment in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

Methods: Utilizing a retrospective dataset of 546 HCC patients from five centers, we developed and validated a clinical-radiological model and deep learning models aimed at MVI prediction. The models were developed on a dataset of 263 cases consisting of data from three centers, internally validated on a set of 66 patients, and externally tested on two independent sets.

Importance: Psychiatric diagnoses are not defined by neurobiological measures hindering the development of therapies targeting mechanisms underlying mental illness. Research confined to diagnostic boundaries yields heterogeneous biological results, whereas transdiagnostic studies often investigate individual symptoms in isolation.

Objective: To develop a framework that groups clinical symptoms compatible with ICD-10 and DSM-5 according to their covariation and shared brain mechanisms.

Heart failure (HF) is a life-threatening condition that poses a significant challenge on public health, particularly among the elder populations. To develop new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for HF, we analyzed large-scale transcriptome sequencing data from HF patients as an exploratory approach. We identified 18 HF-related genes and developed a robust scoring model for HF diagnosis, by applying two machine learning algorithms for data analysis.

Edge-based network models, especially those based on bond percolation methods, can be used to model disease transmission on complex networks and accommodate social heterogeneity while keeping tractability. Here we present an application of an edge-based network model to the spread of syphilis in the Kingston, Frontenac and Lennox & Addington region of southeastern Ontario, Canada. We compared the results of using a network-based susceptible-infectious-recovered (SIR) model to those generated from using a traditional mass action SIR model.
