Biocrusts determine soil stability and resiliency, with a special role played by oxygenic photoautotrophic microorganisms in these communities. We evaluated temporal and geographic trends in studies focused on these microorganisms in biocrusts. Two databases were surveyed to obtain scientific articles published from 1998 to 2020 containing the terms 'biocrusts,' 'algae,' and 'cyanobacteria.' Although interest in biocrusts has increased recently, their ecological importance is still little explored. The scientific articles that mentioned a species list of cyanobacteria and/or algae revealed a very heterogeneous geographic distribution of research. Biocrusts have not been explored in many regions and knowledge in the tropics, where these communities showed high species richness, is limited. Geographic gaps were detected and more detailed studies are needed, mainly where biocrust communities are threatened by anthropogenic impacts. Aiming to address these knowledge gaps, we assembled a taxonomic list of all algae and cyanobacteria found in these articles, including information on their occurrence and ecology. This review is an updated global taxonomic survey of biocrusts, which importantly reveals their high species richness of oxygenic photoautotrophic microorganisms. We believe this database will be useful to future research by providing valuable taxonomic and biogeographic information regarding algae and cyanobacteria in biocrusts.

Harmful cyanobacterial blooms (HCBs) are a public health concern and require ongoing surveillance to monitor the negative water quality effects and cyanotoxins associated with these blooms. (+)-Anatoxin-a (ATX) is a potent neurotoxin produced by select cyanobacteria during HCB formation. Many HCB toxins are commonly associated with discolored water; however, ATX can be present in clear water, which results in a high risk of exposure by accidental ingestion for humans and animals.

Paralytic shellfish poisoning toxins (PSPTs) are a class of neurotoxins most known for causing illness from consuming contaminated shellfish. These toxins are also present in freshwater systems with the concern that they contaminate drinking and recreational waters. This review provides (1) a complete list of the 84+ known PSPTs and important chemical features; (2) a complete list of all environmental freshwater PSPT detections; (3) an outline of the certified PSPT methods and their inherent weaknesses; and (4) a discussion of PSPT toxicology, the weaknesses in existing data, and existing freshwater regulatory limits.

This study reports on the influence of lactic acid fermentation on the proteomic and peptidomic profiles of spirulina protein isolate (SPI)-fortified, freeze-dried powders containing living Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) cells during in vitro digestion. For comparison, powders fortified with whey protein isolate (WPI) and pea protein isolate (PPI) were also evaluated. Prior to freeze-drying, the powder precursors were either non-treated or fermented.

Cyanobacterial blooms are increasingly becoming major threats to global inland aquatic ecosystems. Phycocyanin (PC), a pigment unique to cyanobacteria, can provide important reference for the study of cyanobacterial blooms warning. New satellite technology and cloud computing platforms have greatly improved research on PC, with the average number of studies examining it having increased from 5 per year before 2018 to 17 per year thereafter.
